Kitchen cabinet colours

My friend just moved into her new home build by one of the large developers in the City (Ottawa). Her kitchen has two different colours of cabinetry - dark on the bottom and a vanilla on the top with a set of floor to ceiling cabinets around her fridge that are also in the vanilla. (really beautiful with a wall paint to compliment). She said this was the latest design - and yet I haven't seen it anywhere in HOUZZ kitchen photos. Is this a "new" design element or something that has (already) past?
