Dioons are drought-resistant plants, rare cycads native to Mexico and Central America. Most Dioon plants have grey or blue-green leaves and fine leaflets. We offer a variety of Dioon plants including varieties of Dioon edule and Dioon merolae.

The name Dioon comes from the Greek meaning "two eggs" and refers to these rare plants’ female cones, which have two seeds attached to each sporophyll. Many species of in the genus Dioon come from the deserts and mountains of Mexico, meaning they are heat-tolerant, cold-tolerant and drought-resistant plants.

Three exceptions to this rule are Dioon mejiae (from Honduras) and Dioon spinulosum and Dioon rzedowskii (both from Mexico). Those three species are subtropical, growing taller, with wider, darker green leaflets, and prefer humidity and some afternoon shade.
