This wall-mounted rack was a quick DIY project. The piece of wood is an old floorboard found at Urban Ore, a salvage yard in Berkeley, and the decorative hooks are from Cost Plus World Market. The groove in the top holds postcards from family and friends. The rack extends the length of the entry hallway, making it both impactful and practical.

This primitive chest acts as a low entry hall table. It provides visual interest and a surface for display and technology, as well as storage for seldom-used items. The strength provided by dovetailed corners suggests to me that this piece might have originally been a tool chest.

Right this way. There’s no mistaking where to go in this entryway: The rug leads the way. Area rugs don’t just anchor furniture arrangements; they can also provide direction, as this one does. These vibrant colors really dress up the hallway and turn it into a grand entrance.

If the idea of an active water feature doesn’t appeal to you, fill a beautiful bowl with water, add a few drops of bleach to prevent algae, maybe some small chunks of amethyst or quartz crystal for the bottom, and float candles or garden flowers in it. You can change the water whenever you want; the theory is that it adds life to the room while absorbing negativity.
