4. Dark or BlackDark counters, in tones such as black or charcoal, can appear very gothic in some situations and perfectly harmonious in others. If you have dark cabinetry, dark floors or other rich and weighty finishes, a dark countertop will fit right in. In this example, you can see that the white counter is the one that pops, compared with the island counter, which almost blends into the deep wood drawer fronts.
9. Double cutlery. For years I specified a single-layer cutlery holder for my clients. Now, I include a two-tiered insert to double their amount of cutlery storage.
8. Lack of trays. Not everyone needs an abundance of tray storage. For those clients, I will add a partition to the cabinet and adjustable shelves to the other side.
Pot filler with a spout taller than the water source8. Pot fillers. My old pot filler rule was this: If I put it in, you must promise to use it. But at what height should it be placed? I recommend measuring your tallest pot and then adding an inch or two. And before your contractor plumbs the waterline, be sure to have the pot filler on-site.
Creative seating. Some clients are determined to have kitchen seating, despite not having a lot of space. I love how that goal was accomplished in this photo, with the counter seating beginning in the kitchen and wrapping around the corner into the adjoining room. The entryway to the kitchen is wide enough that the stools do not interfere with traffic flow. Those sitting directly in front of the wall can enjoy the visual interest on the open shelving.Shop for tableware
