2. Get curves in the right places In a similar way, you can save worlds of space by ditching traditional space-guzzling staircases in favour of a graceful spiral number such as the one pictured here. These sculptural pieces are best suited for reaching tight spaces, such as attics or mezzanines – imagine trying to carry a couch, double bed or dining table up or down and you’ll understand why. Even though they don’t suit every person or every site, there’s no denying that spiral staircases graciously give small homes more space than they take.

I love this idea of a floor-length mirror with a glass table and stool placed in front. A multi-purpose area has been created to set down keys, lay out the day’s shoes and handbag in advance, and touch up your make-up, if the bathroom is otherwise occupied. Style it with a vase of fresh flowers, a scented candle with an inviting fragrance and any accessories you may need when coming in and out of the house.

2. Peg them along a wall This display is so simple it works. Wooden pegs, black-and-white prints and a white wall – this colour combo could work just as well in a modern space as it does in one that’s scuffed and rustic old.

If you’re a more set-and-forget type decorator, a more permanent display in the hall can be achieved with the help of gorgeous floral wallpaper. The addition of fresh flowers or a leafy branch (real or otherwise) is optional.
