Visually separate the seating area in an open-plan space using a large sisal rug that fits all the furniture on it. This will help define the perimeter of the zone within the larger, multiuse space. A 6-by-9 rug generally works, and it’s OK for the backs of the sofa and armchair to sit just off the edge of the rug.

More common is to have a curb to define the shower’s parameters, as in the bath here. This curb is normally 3 to 4 inches (8 to 10 centimeters) high and 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 centimeters) wide. Though it’s not as sleek as the previous design, practical limitations may make this the better choice for you.

Should you choose to have a glass enclosure, as in this bath, consider how high you would like to have the glass reach. Showers that have a steam function need to be completely enclosed, as seen here. Otherwise, the top of the glass should reach at least 76 inches (193 centimeters) above the floor. You may want to coordinate the height with the tiles or other wall finishes, or with the height of the windows and doors in the room.

Toilet Paper Holders When placing the paper holder, the tendency can be to picture the roll as hanging lower than it really should. Standard height is about 26 in. off the floor, which is closer to the height of the top of the tank than to the seat, so I recommend placing it on this level for a clean line, like I’ve done in this bathroom. Attaching it to the side of the vanity (toward the front rather than centered, for reachability) is another option for tighter spaces.

Niches. I love adding niches to shower areas, for the practical storage capabilities and the beautiful accent. For a tub they make sense just above the tub surface, as you’ll be lying down when you reach for that shampoo, but in a shower they should be much higher, around 48 in., so you don’t have to lean down to reach anything. Place your shower controls around 42 to 48 in. at the center, and a tub filler 4 to 6 in. above the top of the tub.

10. Have a flat shower entry. This minimizes your risk of tripping over a step as you enter your shower. It’s also a wheelchair-accessible feature. If you forgo a shower step, your shower floor will need to be properly sloped to allow water to drain correctly. If you do include a step, don’t make it large and bulky.

5. Buy a comfort-height toilet. Most toilets are less than 16 inches high. Comfort-height toilets are 17 to 19 inches high, which makes sitting and standing much easier. This will reduce the strain on your back and knees.

1. Install a shower bench. A safe place to sit in the shower is vital for an age-proof bathroom design. Decreasing the amount of time you stand in the shower not only eases the strain on your body, it also reduces the chances of slipping and falling. Your bench can be a built-in and tiled or free-standing. You can even use waterproof seat cushions so you’re not sitting on a hard surface. Find a bench that is large enough for comfortably sitting and bathing.

floor Pros: Porcelain tile is highly versatile. It can survive detergents, scratches and long-term water exposure. It can be finished to have an authentic wood, stone or marble appearance. The best part? It accomplishes all of this without being high-maintenance. Expect to enjoy cleaning it (or the lack of cleaning, rather).
