Art-Inspired Looks Make a Splash at Fall 2020’s High Point Market
Bold colors, sharp angles, geometric shapes, artful patterns and minimalism make a strong showing at the trade show
Furniture and accessories makers are venturing into bold territory with colorful, geometric and art-inspired designs at the Fall 2020 High Point Market (Oct. 13-21). Other products at the trade show build on trends from recent years, with a focus on wellness and the incorporation of neutrals, warm metal finishes, natural materials and organic shapes.
But for those craving color and a sense of playfulness, there is plenty to celebrate at the market, the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world. Artistic inspiration is in abundance, with influences from artists such as Ellsworth Kelly. Postmodern geometric playfulness, Op Art-inspired forms and painterly abstract patterns are standouts in many of the showrooms.

Strong angles also appear on chair legs, table bases and casework. On this swivel dining chair, sharp angles meet the cushioned comfort that people are seeking for their homes. Warm metal finishes such as brass, bronze, gold and champagne are popular at the show.

Abstract art textiles continue to trend. Artist Kelly O’Neal hand-painted the canvas upholstery on this brass-framed chair. His company then turned it into a textile available for use on other furnishings.

Minimalism and comfort are not mutually exclusive. In 2020, everyone has been cuddling up at home more than ever before. This chair design aims to enfold a person (or two) in a big bear hug. The piece, part of Nathan Anthony’s Ours Polaire collection, was inspired by the work of midcentury designer Jean Royère.

Many attendees opted to participate virtually. I attended remotely and was impressed by how easy the show’s organizers and vendors made it to peruse the market from afar.
