Design Vocabulary: Plaster and its Various Types
Have you considered decorating your walls with plaster instead of paint or wallpaper?
Plaster may not be something that you would immediately think about as a decorative wall finish in Singapore, but with more of us interested in international decor trends, you might want to use it in your home.
What is plaster?
Plaster is a mix of cement, sand and sometimes lime powders that are mixed with water and applied to walls. It’s mostly used to cover up brickwork back when walls were actually made of bricks.

Plaster, which is also called stucco, forms a smooth surface however, so it is handy if you’re looking for something to cover up uneven wall surfaces or holes/cracks.
Clay Plaster
Generally the most common type of plaster, Clay plaster is made of clay, sand, various pigments and considered to be a quite healthy product to have on your walls. There are lots of different finishes from rough to smooth depending on the look you want.
Clay plaster is also good at absorbing excess moisture in humid environments which makes it good for our weather, but means it’s not great for areas like bathrooms or for kitchen backsplashes.

Venetian plaster is a mixture of sand, limestone powder and marble dust (which gives it its colour/tint). Because of the marble you can polish it, creating more depth of colour and a luminous sheen.
