Kitchen Tour: This HDB Cookspace is Colourful, Cosy and Quirky
Art tiles and vibrantly hued accessories create a statement-making cookspace
As an art lecturer, this homeowner has very definite and refined aesthetics – but also a more adventurous streak in terms of design than most homeowners. He commissioned and closely worked with Alvin Ling, design director of The Scientist, to incorporate his collection of travel photos and curios in his characterful home. The kitchen, in fact, with a joyful mix of patterns and colours, is the highlight of this home.
The kitchen is not closed off from the living room, so there’s a bright and breezy approach to it. The walls of the other two rooms bordering the living room, too, were replaced with glass walls, so the kitchen and living area have an open-plan feel without actually being that.
In the photo above, the laundry is to the right (not seen), when you enter the kitchen from the living area.
With the living room decorated simply, the kitchen’s patterned tiles visually invade the space, calling you into it.

The art tiles, says Ling, are from Hafary. They selected five different patterns for different planes – and made it work to dramatic effect.
Ling coordinated with the homeowner to ensure that the kitchen was made to measure around the major appliances for that perfect fit.
Eschewing a galley-style kitchen, Ling configured a one-wall with a marble-topped semi-island breakfast nook built into the opposite wall. Wood-patterned laminates add the rustic effect to the cabinet doors.
Bright pops of colour were added in the form of the industrial-style pendant lights and the owner’s cookware.

Who lives here: An art lecturer and his partner
Location: Marine Parade
Designer: Alvin Ling of The Scientist
A major renovation, Ling had reconfigured the 4-room HDB flat so that one bedroom was hacked open to make the master bedroom larger. Rejigging the layout allowed the designer to craft a more efficient kitchen-and-laundry area as well.
In the photo above, the laundry area (with the striped yellow awnings) is slightly visible behind the kitchen. Ling says that the ironing boards, hangers, washing detergents are all hidden behind the cabinets because the owners do not like clutter. “Everything needs to be ‘hidden away’,” he says.
