Mumbai Houzz: A Contemporary Home for a Family of 10
Neutral hues, custom furniture and socialising areas: KNS Architects weave a soothing design story that appeals to all members
A cohesive, harmonious home that was modern and clutter-free, with a vibrant feel – this is what the client wanted for this large joint family of 10, and approached KNS Architects to design it. “The basic idea was to make the spaces look light and spacious, hence a soothing colour scheme was adopted. When interacting with a large family there are bound to be challenges, nevertheless the utmost challenge was to accommodate everyone’s input and bind the space with a unified look and feel,” Neemesh Shah of KNS Architects says.

The formal seating area with a neutral shell houses two bright red chairs and a unique-looking modern chandelier. “A muted backdrop was conceptualised for the playful furniture to pop. The floor and the walls have been treated in a monolithic colour scheme – white. Every area has been designed with its own personality and a zesty colour scheme that is harmonious with the overall design,” Shah says.

The chairs were chosen such that “without having to move them, the chairs can rotate to face either of the seating areas during large gatherings,” says Shah. A small storage nook is created on the side, and pops of colours are added via the vibrant vases.
The TV lounge area follows a subdued colour palette. All the furniture was specially handpicked from Italy. The living room flows on to the dining area.
The vibe of the dining room is clean, relaxed and uncluttered, where the striped flooring and bright wall add a dynamic touch to the space. ”The cobalt-blue back-painted wall induces a pop of colour. The dining table is an interesting piece, as well, made with a sleek top and a solid concrete base. The dining chairs go with the overall look and feel of the area,” Shah says.
The neutral theme of the large modular kitchen is enhanced with a deep-blue countertop. “This space has been planned with a casual breakfast nook, which, interestingly, is the most used space in the house, as per the clients,” Shah says.

The long passageway has “a yellow back-painted wall on one side and a monolithic textured wall on the other – the hallway leads to the bedrooms,” says Shah. The end of the passageway is marked by a textured wallpaper.
Since the home belongs to grandparents and two families including the children, it houses three master bedrooms. “This master bedroom belongs to the elder brother and has a leather headboard – a red back-painted glass wall injects colour into the overall muted palette,” says Shah. The bed was custom-made for the space.
The master bathroom’s counter top is in mosaic, its multicoloured look juxtaposed with the white cabinets and walls. “The room gets a modern vibe via the fittings from Kohler,” says Shah.

The second master bedroom belongs to the younger brother and is furnished with a headboard “in acrylic with backlit onyx as the backdrop. The adjoining wall has textured wallpaper that gives the room an earthy, warm feeling,” Shah says. All the furniture in this room and others was imported from Italy.

The third master bedroom, the grandparents’ bedroom, follows a subdued tonality, enhanced with a leather headboard and a wallpaper behind it. The adjoining wall sports a marble-like beige Travertine finish.
The children’s bedroom is a snug space that is wallpapered on two sides; the third wall is a shutter that opens to a large window. The study area is fitted into a corner, brightened with multicoloured storage and chairs for a playful vibe.
