Mumbai Houzz: A Designer's Home Celebrates Sea Views & Wooden Accents
Interior designer and co-founder of ns*a helps design her own apartment
“The client’s requirement was for a bright and a spacious house,” said Neesha Alwani, co-founder of ns*a. And in this case, the owner of the apartment is none other than Shruti Jalan, the other co-founder of the design firm. Being on a higher floor, this flat provides uninterrupted views of the ocean from three sides. Together, the duo worked around creating a design that maximised views where possible and also offer the warmth of a home.
The foyer leads to the living cum dining room. In the living area, the designers used mid-century modern style furniture with two sofas in deep blue and grey chenille. White stucco lime plaster dresses the walls and creates a light, smooth texture. Wide windows bring in natural light and ventilation and offer breathtaking views.

There is also a faceted bar placed at far end corner of the living area which is finished in matte brass and has a black glass top. The designers used a Art Deco Burma teak bar cabinet for storage against the wall.
This living area is also shared by a dining space, which is defined by fine, golden-smoked oak wood strips or fins. These segregate the dining space from the family and living room, while maintaining a visual connection.

Beyond the main drawing room is “the family room which houses a comfortable lounging area, a large projector screen and a study. Fine wooden fins on a sliding panel gives the user the option to open up or cordon off the space as per their requirement. When open, the family room and living room appear as one large living space,” says Neesha Alwani.
Even when closed, the panels don’t obstruct views. Combined with the neutral, white marble flooring, they maintain a bright and an airy feel.
“The elegance and warmth of the palette of materials makes this home sophisticated and welcoming at the same time,” adds Alwani.

Jalan says, “The kitchen is a highly functional space designed using the same colour palette as the rest of the house.” It features counters and dados in white quartz while the overhead and under counter shutters are in oak wood veneer.
“Black powder coated matte finished edging and hardware gives the kitchen a sharp look. A charcoal grey stone finished tile makes up the floor,” adds Jalan.

An oak wood veneer-panelled passage leads to the two bedrooms, which include the master bedroom and the client’s 7-year-old son’s bedroom. There is a large niche in the passage adorned with art and artefacts. The bronze mirror in the background create a sense of expanse and adds visual drama.
Situated towards the end of the apartment, the master bedroom has corner windows that offer spectacular views of the sea – giving an almost boundless feel to the room.
“Keeping the geography of the room in mind, the bed was placed in the middle of the room overlooking the magnificent view,” said Alwani. “Being in the master bedroom would appear as though one is sailing on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean.”

The bedroom has a four-poster bed with leather headboard and freeform side tables in wood with matte black glass tops. There is also a walk-in-wardrobe with sliding panels made up of slender wooden fins, which lend a picturesque backdrop for the bed.
A similar sliding panel cordons the master bathroom from the bathroom.

“Open niches in shades of blue, futons and floor cushions in a mix of colours, wardrobes with playful handles make up the elements of this room,” says Alwani.
The son’s bathroom also has a sliding door with grid pattern design that is a mix of coloured and textured glass panels.
