Pair pattern with solid colour
In this renovated midcentury kitchen the designer has used warm ochre cupboard doors to colour block the space in combination with a tonally similar warm blue on the right hand wall.
But visual interest is upped further by the yellow and white geometric tiled splashback. As well as adding a flash of another, darker, shade of yellow, which adds depth, the detail also provides a link with the white worktop, tying the whole room together.

Brighten up connecting spaces
Some connecting spaces can run the risk of being dark and dingy, but if there’s one colour that’s sure to add a refreshing touch to your hall and landing, it’s yellow.
Unlike many UK and Irish hallways, this simple, crisp staircase has the benefit of plenty of natural light to save it from feeling dark (and to highlight that beautiful, traditional-style wood panelling). But the real attention seekers here are the sunny yellow curtains and bright seating. They bask warmly in the light coming through the window and brighten the tone of the grey walls.
If space doesn’t allow you to have seating in your hallway or on the landing, some vibrant yellow artworks or a few golden trinkets on a shelf or ledge will be sure to bring similar sunshine into your space.

Warm up a white kitchen
White, minimalist kitchens remain hugely popular on Houzz, and in this context, adding key accessories in yellow can really warm up the look. Yellow is a clean, refreshing colour, so it fits into this contemporary kitchen style with ease.
These statement yellow bar stools are a great mood-lifter, and would make even the lightest of spaces a little brighter. Employing that designer favourite, the rule of three, the chairs’ shade is picked up in the multi-coloured cushion and citrus display on the worktop. You could equally make your third item in a happy scheme like this a lemon-covered cookbook, propped-up postcard or small framed print.

Try a tiny touch
With such a bright colour, there’s no need to go overboard: sometimes, a small touch can make a big impact.
Take this bathroom, for example. With a deep wall colour and minimal lighting, the inclusion of a little yellow book makes the room feel friendlier and, because it catches your eye, it takes attention away from the sanitaryware.

Make it your centrepiece
Use this welcoming shade to create a focal point in a room.
Because of its depth and texture, this circular wall decoration really stands out, holding its own next to the wardrobes and fire surround.
Note how the soft grey of the wall tonally complements the soft yellow here: when choosing hues to pair up, picking shades with similar depths of colour will help them to complement one another.

Make it part of the mix
Colourful dining chairs are a great way to bring life – and conversation – to your table. Grey, white and mustard is a classic combination and here, side by side with two muted neutrals, the yellow chairs really stand out. This set-up makes for a bright and energising place to eat breakfast and start the day.
If you want to create this look without buying brand-new chairs, just sand and prime old wooden ones – they don’t need to match in style – and get to work finishing them off with your chosen topcoat. Spray paint will give a super-smooth finish. If you have non-wooden chairs, look into chalky paints, which typically stick to anything (there are lots of guides online). Then sit back and enjoy your newly enlivened dining area.
If you just can’t get enough of this trend, you can also layer up shades of yellow in your soft furnishings, as seen here.

Create subtle luxury
To neutrals die-hards, yellow might sound daunting. But just because it’s yellow doesn’t mean it has to be bright and in your face. Slightly deeper, more sunset shades, as well as paler, less bold hues, can create a luxury – and, yes, muted – look without the price tag.
This oh-so-neutral room has been given an edge with the addition of luxe yellow-gold cushions for a dash of discreet glamour. This is a great way of showing how subtle yellow can be.

Yellow goes really well with other current colour trends, such as the ever-popular grey as well as deeper, darker shades – inky walls make a great backdrop for yellow and mustard tones.
This bedroom demonstrates how both pale and dark greys work beautifully with this honeyed hue in the form of a golden velvet chaise. The jewel shade also ties in tonally with the natural wood details to create a cosy, autumnal bedroom.
