The couple's neighborhood, Capitol Hill has a strong community spirit, with arts centers, garden clubs, and civic organizations, including one that helps keep elderly residents in their homes by helping with chores. Eateries include a Balkan restaurant, French cafes, and noodle houses, plus what Marcia calls "the crown jewel of the city," Eastern Market with its vendors, a farmer's market, craft fair, and flea market, along with food trucks and live music.
As Marcia says, "We know someone on nearly every block, and know all the shopkeepers. We rarely need our cars, taking Metro, walking, and biking. Our children could walk to school, or take public transit to their events all over the city without a parent having to drive them. As a result, they were independent and engaged in all aspects of city life... both of our children chose an urban college campus, and now live in cities where cars are not needed."
