Elsternwick Development

Elsternwick, in Melbourne’s inner south, is a quiet suburb within easy reach of the city and bayside beaches, and home to the National Trust listed Rippon Lea mansion, a triumph of 19th century polychromatic brickwork. Taking its inspiration from Rippon Lea, this development of three-bedroom, three level townhouses uses Austral Bricks Burlesque glazed bricks in Chilling Black along the entire ground level. Stack bonding of the brickwork adds to the effect that is further heightened by the use of white mortar, made with Brighton Light cement and white oxide. Not only is the result sharp, modern and clean but it will stay that way. In an area where graffiti is prevalent, the non-porous nature of the glazed brickwork provides a good surface for removing it easily. Photographer: Roger du Buisson
