Making the Best of a Forgotten Space
The spring house with its typically flooded floor.
The plant growing on the face of the spring house is a Climbing Hydrangea (Hydrangea anomala sub. petiolaris). This great vine has year round interest and is extremely versatile. It becomes self supporting by the use of tiny "holdfasts" which it attach to the surface of walls, trees, arbors, pergolas, etc. It also has the potential to drape itself beautifully over the side of walls (as seen here, next to the steps) or along steep embankments as a ground cover. It's flower is a delicate, white lacecap.
