Sapporo, Japan

Client brief was to create a naturalistic landscape within a rest home in Sapporo, Japan, which gives an impression of a dense woodland structure without the option of planting trees as the site is used for to store snow during winter, a significant challenge for gardeners in northern Japan. The ground was very compacted and nutrient poor, and by using robust plants and introducing composting the soil will gradually be improved. I included sensory plantings with tactile foliage and brightly coloured flowers and edible plants to provide association with wild food and stimulate the senses of garden users.
