THE AMAZING JHOOLA
In an open verandah, the Jhoola or Wooden Swinging Cot offered a pleasant perch to watch the world outside; inside a house it can seem cumbersome and out of place. As time passes, the swings were removed, leaving just the hooks; if you close your eyes, perhaps you can still hear the swing’s creak.
And yet jhoolas continue to have an allure. Perhaps it is the memories they carry, as much as that soothing rocking motion, but it is interesting watch how people react when they find one in a house they visit. They don’t automatically sit in a jhoola – there is a sense of them as thrones, reserved for the masters of the house – but when they do it is with a palpable sense of pleasure.
There is an automatic sense of relaxation and it is hard to get into a heated argument in a jhoola.
The Swinging Cot is a “a three foot by five foot wooden rectangle… with brass trimmings, a thin dhurrie and a bolster cushion.” It could be used, with all nearby furniture cleared away, for energetic swinging by the kids in the family, but “it was also the setting for late-night gossip (private time for parents) or for the whole family to cluster together.” Some of his happiest memories of family life came from sitting around the jhoola as his father would rock and reminisce about his past life.
