Why call it a "Japanese Tea House"

Calling it a Japanese tea house seems so strange when it has very little to do with the style or function of a Japanese Tea House. Call it a " new age" or "meditation Hut" or something, but it smacks of either deliberate misuse of a foreign culture, or lack of understanding of it. There are some beautiful elements, but I would not call them "Japanese". You would find it basically lacking in all required elements for a Japanese tea house, in spite of it's "prettiness".

Schoonerbob, Thank you for your question and taking the time to write. It appears that you are a fan of Japanese architectural and design style as are we. It is not only beautiful and graceful but easily lends itself to artistic expression which is why many of its elements are found weaving throughout some of our designs. Artistic expression is not meant to be “traditional” per se, but rather it is the artistic interpretation and expression of the artist. All of our designs are just that, artistic expressions of both the customer’s and our own input, which creates unique one-of-a-kind art pieces.

In regards to the Japanese Tea House that you are referring to, it was never intended to be a “traditional” Tea House in the way that you perceive, but rather an artistic expression based on the style of a traditional Japanese Tea House using our own Metaphysical design principals and customer’s input. I would suggest, that if you have the time to visit our web site (miriamsriverhousedesigns.com), you can read the description that we have given for its design. I think it would help you understand that there is not and never was any intended disrespect aimed at the Japanese culture. This particular Japanese Tea House, designed using metaphysical principles, was intended to be a one-of-a-kind art piece, yet still functional. We are Metaphysical designers (not necessarily new age) and we design structures using the principles of mathematics, physics, historical spiritual concepts, and so forth. Combining and weaving these kinds of concepts and elements into our gardens and structures is a part of our business that we dearly love. Our art pieces are meant to invoke thought provoking discussion, which is one of the goals of any artist. Is our style for everyone? Absolutely not. Do you have to agree with it? Absolutely not. But for those who look for deeper meaning in life and the universe around them, our design style is going to resonate with them.

We have performed a number of Chanoyu demonstrations at our business location and at other locations for organizations interested in learning about the amazing beauty of a Chanoyu. Personally, I believe that the Chashitsu (traditional or our version) and the Chanoyu are very deeply connected to universal beauty, and again, in my opinion, very metaphysical in their meanings. Consider the “traditional” guest door, nijiriguchi, whose size and form contain a wealth of metaphysical information. At my age however, the idea of crawling through this small opening leaves me wondering if I would be able to get back up. It’s a good day to make yourself a cup of Usucha, sit back and contemplate the wonderful elements found in Japanese design. My best to you, Nancy Drobnick

I agree with the others - ask your neighbor about painting the side of the garage that faces your yard. Depending on your style of decor, you can treat this as a part of your yard and change the appearance completely. Consider a low fence to separate your yard from the street/driveway, something similar to the red fence shown, to provide you a smaller "room" for entertaining. I live in an area where the side of the neighbors house defines the property line and have decorated the side of the neighbors house with various items to break up the expanse of wall (old window frames with the glass missing, sections of old iron fences, bird houses, etc); it really helps to cozy up the space. A trench filled with gravel and topped with larger rocks will help with the water issue and direct the water to other areas of the yard. A brick or paver patio would be lovely for establishing a conversation/grill area. The pictures submitted by PC have some great ideas. I can't recommend plants since I have not idea what part of the country you are located in

Prep only kitchen island dimensions

I was hoping to have an island, but as I stand in the old kitchen and measure and open oven doors...it feels like it might get in the way. I'll be pushed up against the island when I open up the oven door! I do a lot of cooking. I have 3 ft on one side of the oven and 2 feet between the oven and the prep sink. If I remove the island, there is 8' between the sink/fridge wall and the oven. Perhaps a portable prep station that I can put in front of the pantry wall? Style is farmhouse/country...could custom build a little prep island on casters.

HI Rachel, that is the sweetest question that i have come across on Houzz. You win the prize for sure. I am assuming that you want to brew a cup of black tea with milk? Recipe: 1. Boil some fresh water in a electrical kettle or in a small pot over fire. Let it come to a nice boil as you supposed to get the temp of the water to about 96%. 2. Once its boiled, pour a little of the water into your tea cup (notice i did not say mug as i believe that tea ought be enjoyed from a tea cup and saucer and not a mug. You did ask how to make the "perfect cup of tea" ha ha ). Swirl the water a little to heat your cup and pour out the water. 3. Place a tea bag of your choice into the tea cup. 4. Pour the freshly boiled water into your tea cup and let it sit for 30 secs or longer if you like your tea stronger. I leave mine for about a min. 5. Whilst waiting for the tea to brew, you could add a tea spoon of sugar to sweeten your brew if you require. 6. Now add a little room temperature milk and stir with a teaspoon. I find sometimes that hot milk curdles a little when added to a brew of tea. 7. Remove the tea bag after your like the colour of your tea. 8. And now for the most important part, its absolutely crucial to call SUGARBAKERS and let us know that the tea is ready and we can bring our cake and sit with you to enjoy your perfect cup of tea. YES! YES!! i can already hear naysayers saying that one needs to add milk into the cup first and then the hot water and tea bag. Milk was traditionally added to tea cups by the English a long time ago (and has become part of tea drinking culture and tradition today) However the reason why tea was added first was rather debatable. Some say that milk was added first to cool the fine bone china tea cups that were imported from China in those days so as not to crack them. Most cups today are made of porcelain and they are rather strong and can withheld a high temperature. Whichever way you decide best, just dont stick a cup of water with a tea bag into the microwave. The large rapid bubbles will cause your tea bag to tear and you will be left with a some loose leaves in your cup. Unless of course you want your fortune read. Whether you brew your cup of tea... 1. cup - hot water - tea bag - milk 2.cup - milk - tea bag - hot water 3.cup - milk -hot water - tea bag ............ which ever way you brew it, make sure you use fresh water and your water is hot and give it a few seconds to brew before you call us to enjoy it with you. Just a quick tip for brewing green tea or herbal tea. Dont boil your water to a very high temperature. Herbal teas and green tea taste nicer when the water is about 70 to 80 degree celsius and you dont get the metallic taste. Unlike coffee, tea has a huge tradition and culture in many countries. Sometimes it does not hurt to learn from other tea drinkers. Lets have tea someday? Hope this helps you?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Your Japanese Tea house is truly a work of art. Changing a name will not distract from the careful detail and thought given to your design.
