Countertops

What is the best edge right now for countertops? It seems like a little thing, but my style is somewhat traditional, yet they say too fussy an edge is hard to clean, bullnose is dated.... Sigh....

Instead of worrying about what is in style, go with what you like unles you're renovating to sell. And don't worry about being traditional. At least half of the homes here on the design forum are remarkably traditional IMO so you're more in style than you think. -:)

It all depends on the stone, size, and color of the grain on the countertop. With traditional countertops you want to counter the level of elegance of your molding. For example, if you have a lot or busy molding/details you want to use a more simplistic edge and vice-versa. Although countertop edges may seem like a small thing, it can really tie your kitchen together. We could be more helpful as far as suggestions go if you can provide photos of your actual kitchen space. In the mean time, take a look at some of our traditional kitchens that we designed. I would seriously consider replacing the cabinets before putting a new granite countertop on them. The problem is that no one will remove the countertop at a later date if you want to change the cabinets, due to the possibility of breakage. The only choice you will have then is a reface. Adding new doors, drawer fronts, and veneered sides is just a facelift. You could also add new hardwood drawers with undermount cushion close slides, but by the time you do this if will be the same cost as new cabinets now. The cabinets you have now, frameless, particle board sides are notorious for having the hinge screws strip out the particle board they are attached to. Since you can't put a longer screw in them, because the material is only 3/4" of an inch thick you have a problem. You also can't put a wider screw in them because it won't fit through the pre-drilled holes in the hinges.

Don't know about ABET laminates, but grew up with laminate countertop from a different mfg. No problems. We never placed anything hot directly on them, always used hot plates. But then again, i would never place anything hot directly on a granite counter. To nice looking...why take the chance ?

Need to replace current built-in stove.

I have a 10 year old stove that needs replacing. My kitchen is still in good condition and I have a solid surface countertop. My problem is with the cutout size. My current cutout size is 555x470mm. Many stoves do not fit my current cutout. Can I just change the portion of solid surface where the stove sits? Is it possible to cut the existing countertop and join a new piece seamlessly with a cutout to fit a brand new stove?

I like the simple, timeless eased edge. But I'm not a fan of kitchens with too many flourishes and ornamental details in the first place.

Love the look of eased and 1/2 (or less) bullnose. I also like the eased on both top and bottom.
