Help on Floor Plan

Hello, I need help on this house floor plan which you will notice has no bedroom. That's because I will build this "guest house" near my home to receive guests on big occasions or for my family to relax in it during daytime.
I am no experts in designing but this is what's in my mind (I used have circles to indicate doors because I don't know how to add door symbol in Sketchup). I also, attached a picture of this home in my neighborhood (and that's how I want my house to look like, more or less). Anyway, any feedback will be highly appreciated. BTW: I am using metric measurements.

I'm a bit surprised that it's not a courtyard plan with an open space in the center with social spaces surrounding it to create a sense of privacy for you and your guests when entertaining. I don't know what climate this project is located but if you have a chance to open up some of the spaces to a courtyard it may provide a great level of interest and at least light during the winter months.

Thanks for the comment. This will be in middle east where privacy is taken another step, but I would like to look at your proposal (if you have a handy layout). I am not really familiar with the courtyard concept (can you please elaborate a little?). Thanks again for commenting.

David - Thanks! Appreciate that you even drew out the plan. :) You are absolutely right, it's been difficult finding an optimum layout. In fact, our current layout is more or less the same as your plan. Would you have chosen different furniture - a smaller sofa or a different dining table perhaps? (Also, I'm curious: is there a good reason why the architect had the pillar like that?) Mona - Do you mean having a buffet at the entry? I currently do have a sideboard, though it wouldn't fit at the entry - it's about 67" wide by 18" deep. It's currently placed in the middle of the long wall. There's actually still sufficient clearance between it and the 3-seater sofa in David's plan. plague - The household shelter is a local (Singapore) building requirement. Its walls are reinforced and is meant to be a shelter in times of emergency. It can't be removed, and any renovations carried out cannot affect its integrity (there is a list of permitted and prohibited works). Normally it is just used as a pantry or storeroom.

So you just want to enclose the top area to make it a place to sleep? Does it need to have a kitchen and bathroom or just a sleeping area? I am not an architect but you might want to ask more direct questions like " How can I enclose this upper floor to make it livable?". It looks like you live in a very mild climate. Perhaps you should put up wood walls with windows that match the design on the balcony panels. I am not a builder so I hope someone else has some ideas for you.

The privacy issue is enhanced by the use of courtyards that were in many cases encourage in the Middle East and in countries that were influenced by Islam. The idea is that all rooms have an inward view to this private courtyard and it provides a high level of privacy for the occupants. A direct way to gain privacy was to build a wall however having rooms provide the "wall" instead allowed for more daylight in all the rooms in such a plan. This is an image I just grabbed to demonstrate the general idea.
