Ambient lighting : options and guidelines
Comments (4)You mean general lighting? Ambient light is whatever lighting happens to be spilling into the space. Could even be from outdoors or another room. Lighting is generally divided into general, task and accent lighting. General usually being overhead and providing a base level of illumination. Task being things like lamps, vanity lights or pendants-anything helping u see better. And accent being anything used to accent or emphasize something. Sometimes the categories run together like under cabinet lights which are both task and accent. So in order to figure out what the right fixture or lamp is you have to determine is it for general, accent or task purposes. Fluorescent tubes make great general light in an office or workspace but poor task or accent light in a family room. Similarly lots of recessed lights work well in kitchens but are usually too much in bedrooms where you typically don't need much general lighting. A good vanity fixture might fulfill all three in a powder room but in a master bathroom you might need some recessed cans to provide task lighting over the shower or tub. A lamp might be enough in a bedroom but not enough for a heavy task area like a laundry room. You get the idea. It's less about the fixture and more about how it's being used....See MoreWhat upholstery goes with this table?
Comments (5)I think if you want to show off the nice wood grain and inlay of the table, go light color on the sofa, even cream like the drapes, or neutral like the carpet, or a shade darker. Then you can add whatever accents you like in pillow colors, accessories which can easily change seasonally or with time and little cost. The sofa(s) are so big that you might not want them making the most design statement in the room, but just providing comfy seating and a big amount of soothing neutral color. It helps to look at your room like its a landscape painting, foreground, midground, background. Sofas would be midground and you don't want them too bright or busy to overpower the other planes in the roomscape. The colors you have now work, but I would go solid with a textured fabric, something soft like a chenille....See MoreUrgent-Need help for dining table and sofa selection
Comments (1)Go with the leather that is a shade lighter that the floors. Otherwise it could get lost in blur of grey. Use accent colors in the lamp shades, wall art and throws. I also like the white table better. The metal table is more industrial. Than the style you are going for....See MoreRound double height dining room fan and lighting
Comments (0)We are building our new house with a round double height dining room for a round dining table and we want to have a ceiling fan as well as a long pendant lights that echo the roundness of the room. The design team is modern tropical. The ceiling fan would have to be on a very long rod and the pendant lights also. We don't want the epileptic effect of the fan spinning under the lights. Any ideas would be welcome....See Moreminnie101
