What causes these cracks on my bathroom sinks?

Hi
Just wondered what causes the cracks on our bathroom sinks? We certainly don't drop things in there that's hard enough to crack it (am not sure what material the sinks are made from) but over time there is faint black lines that now I see 2 have gotten worse? Could it be my bathroom cleaning spray? I certainly don't toss bleach to sit in the sink. Just use good old Mr Muscle Bathroom Spray to spray and leave for a minute on taps so it's easier to remove the limescale and shine. So I just use same cloth to spray and wipe inside basins and the plug?
Is there any way to repair or spray a white sealer to fix up and make look neat or to prevent from spreading / getting worse which could spoil look of whole basin?

Comments (4)Marble are both non-porous thus it would cause etching and corrosion. Besides that, marble are high maintenance materials. Marble requires proper care and maintenance. Acid should never be used on marble as it shall loose its shine. Marble should be regularly polished over a period of time to give it a new look. If proper precautions are not taken the marble becomes yellowish in colour. Italian marble is usually very soft and prone to cracks. Proper resins have to be used to make the surface strong and solid and avoid further cracks. Proper sealants should be used in marble flooring as the marble is highly porous and prone to staining. It absorbs stains very quickly especially kitchen stains hence are not appropriate for kitchen counter tops. Comments (8)if you lighten the cabinets etc, then the stone will appear more prominent. if that is what you want, that is fine. I sensed that you did not like the current counter. I would contact a marble/granite installer to see if they think that the cracks can be filled and polished out. it is pretty common to do this on new installations if it is feasible. they may try to charge you as as much as you would spend on a fabricating a counter out of a new slab if they did not do the original installation....See MoreMust Know About Integrated Sink

3 years agoThe same has happened in the sink my husband uses. The sink is nine years old and first noticed this year. Mine side of the sink is fine but he does use hot water on the cold sink daily to wet shave and I think this is why only his sink has the hairline cracks. To temporarily hid the cracks I pour near bleach on them and let it sit on cosmetic pads for a few hours or overnight and they do disappear for a couple of months.
