how to do with the bay window

Hi, this bay window was an extension, no original hard wood flooring. Plywood only now. Carpet has been removed. The height of the window is about 30cm. Please advise how to do if I want to add same red oak floors. Or is there other options? Thank you.

I have to say that well made Roman Shades are not cheap, they are the higher end of the market. Secondly the thing to consider is that they are an all or nothing product, they are either open or closed. What part of the country do you live in? What direction do the windows face, and how often are those doors used? Drapery that can not be moved completely out of the way will get caught in the doors all the time, so while I hate taking out a window for any reason, removing it might make sense as it seems rather redundant. Don't do any type of venetian if this door is used a lot, and if you do, make sure you do an outside mount, allowing for the stack to go above the frame of the doors when they are open. I suggest that you look into Hunter Douglas Polysatin Shutters, they are great on french doors, and the Hunter Douglas Duette Architella Vertiglide is perfect on doors, they also come as a duo light, meaning you can put two blinds into one product - so a sheer and an opaque or semi-opaque product. Just some thoughts to consider.

As long as both sub floors are even, you can just run your hardwood over the seam.

Thank you, Emilyam 819. Subfloor is not quite even. Is there any material can be used to make it even? some parts under the window are a little bit lower.

When adding new flooring, They mostly always have to sand and refinish existing flooring to get it to match. It will end up being a pretty big project!

looking at your picture the window seem to be high enough to have a bench build , if you do decide on one make it that you can use it for storage .

HI -- Don't have a bench built in because it will fill it in and you will loose that open roomy feel. Just have a flooring pro to deal with the floor leveling . If the difference isn't much it could just need some sanding down . Anyway it is best to keep the floor space for an open feel .

Actually the concrete is just to make the Plywood surface be even to the main part

No concrete. If you had concrete, you wouldn't be able to nail the floor in.

Seems like if the floor is drastically out of level, you need to use shims or something to raise the subfloor.

Redo the subflooring. Use the same 1x material as the existing subfloor. Also, it is also best to splice the new flooring into the existing meaning cut back some of the existing by one joist bay and weave the new 1x material into the old. If the subfloor is uneven, then you will have to shim with wood wedges under the new subflooring as you go to maintain a continuous flat surface with the existing subfloor. The use of dissimilar subfloor materials, as shown (even if they are both wood) will expand and contract differently eventually causing joint separation in the new finish flooring if continuing with the hardwood over the plywood as is. PS - 18" is typical for any seating; 12" would be too low.

No bench. You will also have to relocate your floor vent. You want to keep all perimeter vents to cool or heat your space. 1/8-1/4" difference can be made up. Running the same wood is the best way to maximize the use of your bay window area.

aldenp and ycity summed it up. Can be done but you'll have to be sure you source the same wood and you'll have to refinish everything in the area for a perfect match.....moving all furniture and art, tons of dust, and maybe moving out for a day with the smell. I did it with my main level when we matched the wood in the kitchen. Total pain, but result was worth it. Personally, not having that section match perfectly would drive me bonkers.

A truly expert floor person should be able to match the existing wood AND stain color with little to no perceptible difference. Am saying this due to experience when wrecked kitchen floor was replaced with hardwood oak 7 years ago to match adjacent dining room redone 20 years prior.

If that idea still bothers you, perhaps consider a parquet (fancy wood pattern) there or ceramic tile. Although a built in seat is beautiful, it may only be "for looks". I'd agree with other post to keep it more open; use for a plant or two/plant and settee with narrow side table/...?...!

Definitely continue the flooring - it would leave you more options in the future. Without seeing the rest of the room and how you use it - it doesn't make sense to put in a permanent built-in.

What if you installed the new floor perpendicular to existing in sunburst style pattern.? Totally thinking out loud here. I just googled inlay wood floors. Look at this! It's a tile!

I am a sucker for window seats and the vent can be turned to come out the front base of the window seat discretely. 30 cm - about 12 inches (assuming that is to the bottom of the trim), if you add a 4" cushion it will be a low seat (usual bench seating about 16 inches but the foam will compress a bit). If the 12 inches is to the window ledge (top of the molding), you do not have enough height for a window seat.

Of course the bench and custom cushion will cost some $ also. You could build in some storage there with a lift top bench under the cushions.

I have a bench in my bay window and love it, we are using it all the time. We have an old edge grain fir floor in our living room and we replaced the vinyl in the dining with the same flooring. We now have a difference but I am sure that it will match as soon as we refinish the old existing floor.

Definitely get opinions from more than one reputable hardwood floor specialist. Most experienced ones will be able to tell you what kind of existing floor you have, who the manufacturer was and may even be able to get more. If that turns out to be the case, be aware that any new product you install will be lighter than the existing floor, but with time the colour will deepen and even out. If you could live with that for a while it may save you the cost of sanding and refinishing.

Level the plywood to the subfloor using a floor levelling compound. There are several different types made specifically for this purpose. It's a concrete like product, provides the strength needed but nails holding the actual flooring can still penetrate through. A skilled pro can use a trowel and make the transition and any low spots perfectly level with the subfloor. As a DIY project, I've done it myself and it's quite easy. Then they can probably match the new flooring fairly well to the existing flooring and it's a relatively easy fix.

I had the same problem with a bump out we added to our kitchen, 6' by 10'. When we installed new hardwood the guys spent a fair amount of time discussing the best way to fix the problem. They ended up using shims, it ended up taking most of the morning but they were able to get level. If you're putting in hardwood make sure to get inset matching vent covers. They make such a difference.
