Need help with covering windows on French doors that are very close to

My bedroom is very bright. There are room darkening blinds on all windows except for on the French doors. Light wakes me every morning. The prob is that there is a small window right next to it and no way to shades on the door itself. Was planning curtains ... Where do I put the curtains? Over the window and the door or just over the door?

A wall of curtains, floor to ceiling and corner to corner. Makes the ceilings appear higher and adds great texture to walls. You can open them when you would like and close them for a more dramatic effect.

You could do relaxed Roman shades on the doors. Or have you thought about an outside awning for the doors. Not sure if this would work for early AM sun, but it might be worth looking into.

I think I would take out that small window and have it drywalled. If not I would put wooden blinds on the French doors and window.

Are you saying that cooking next to the chute would gross you out even if its covered? Andd to use it for its intended purpose? In the first picture, it looks like the stove is directly underneath the chute, but I can see in other pics that it is not. I think it is far enough away. If everything is bagged properly, it shouldn't be that bad. You will have to check on local code regarding having the stove next to the window. Code may make your decision for you. People usually just put shorter cabinets above that type of range hood. I would recommend doing so because you need all the storage you can get. The hood--being different from the bank of cabinets--will provide relief to the eye. With cabinets above, it'll still feel balanced. And, as for covering the chute, do you want to cover it and restrict access or do you still need to use it for its intended purpose and just want to camouflage it? To help the room feel pleasant, cheery, and light, I recommend using a glass tile. Even though it's applied to a wall, the translucency still shows and evokes a sense of the adjectives above. I think it would help keep things light. Consider a slightly higher toe-kick underneath the lower cabinets. It helps to create a lighter-footed feeling. You could also consider cabinets that have furniture style feet. for a more open feeling. Your kitchen seems like an ideal room to use modern, lacquered cabinets. I don't know if you like the super-modern look, but I think it could be nice. Maybe just for the uppers. Use a medium-to-light toned wood on the bottom. A limestone floor might be nice. Or you can do wood or laminate. You could go with dark or light. I think it's mostly about preference.

Just wondering what is the current wall color? Looks lavender. I'm not a fan of accent walls in a bedroom. To me a bedroom should be relaxing and varying wall colors seem stimulating by their very nature (think they're great in other rooms though). But if you want to do one, I would do as you suggested, the wall where your headboard is located. Figure out what you want to keep (sounds like the headboard and the red chair are definitely staying), then work around that. I think cool greys are very pretty and a wonderful neutral that work would work well with your headboard and chair. Then you could bring in the other colors you like through bedding and artwork. If storage is an issue, can you get some bins on wheels for beneath your bed? Also can you consolidate all those smaller tables and get one larger table/storage piece in its place? I would check out IKEA if it's in your budget. Also given the size of your bedroom, if possible I would go with simple curtains that are the same color as your walls. Good luck!

I'd probably put the same style blinds on the doors (are you using wooden-slat venetians? ... If not, Romans are always nice and would be inexpensive for the doors that little window).

Next, I'd consider floor to ceiling panels - 3 of them. One on each side of the doors, and one on the remaining side of the window. You may need something in the space under the window - maybe a semi-circular table that hugs the wall - so it doesn't look too bare.

Because this is a gamble, try having some friends hold up some sheets to see if you like the look. If its too busy, stick with just the blinds. Those should block light sufficiently.

I have to say that well made Roman Shades are not cheap, they are the higher end of the market. Secondly the thing to consider is that they are an all or nothing product, they are either open or closed. What part of the country do you live in? What direction do the windows face, and how often are those doors used?

Drapery that can not be moved completely out of the way will get caught in the doors all the time, so while I hate taking out a window for any reason, removing it might make sense as it seems rather redundant.

Don't do any type of venetian if this door is used a lot, and if you do, make sure you do an outside mount, allowing for the stack to go above the frame of the doors when they are open.

I suggest that you look into Hunter Douglas Polysatin Shutters, they are great on french doors, and the Hunter Douglas Duette Architella Vertiglide is perfect on doors, they also come as a duo light, meaning you can put two blinds into one product - so a sheer and an opaque or semi-opaque product.

Just some thoughts to consider.

Manual roller shade with blackout fabric. Small box on the wall or a valence at the ceiling. Not exactly aesthetically pleasing but functional. Drapes along the entire wall solve your window problem when the drapes are stacked back and will soften/quiet the room. We use a pair of hinged shutters to block the light from a door in our bedroom. We just lean it against the wall every morning. Ours our "vintage". Double french doors being wider would be a little more difficult to deal with. Just blue-skying all the possibilities. You could also find a good trim carpenter or cabinetmaker to make two solid panels to fill in the glass - with thumbturn hardware to put them in each night and remove them each morning. You could slide them under the bed. Immediate/Temp solution is aluminum foil taped to the glass. (grin)

You can buy enclosed blinds that mount on each door. Not cheap.

Actually the enclosed blinds work pretty well and aren't too bad a price, they sell them at home depot, I think the manufacturer is ODL. I bought one for a door into my kitchen, didn't want any fabric or blinds swinging around. Neat and clean.

RE: advice about blinds from Live Beautiful Designs...I have had inside-mount 2-inch wood blinds on my French-style doors for 15 years. The doors are used multiple times a day to access the deck and back yard off the kitchen. The blinds are attached at the bottom of the doors but can be disconnected for raising (stacking) or for cleaning the windows. I close the blinds every night and open them every day, and I have never had a problem. I love the look and the ability to control the amount of light I let in. I have these blinds on every window in the house and, along with the white millwork, they give great continuity. They are a reasonably-priced option.

I would do the same style blinds on the doors with brackets at the bottom of the door to secure the blinds when they are down. That way they won't flap around when you open and close the doors. That's what we did and it works well for light control.
