New kitchen advice

We are renovating our 1950's kitchen-new cabinets, appliances, etc. could anyone provide advice on drawer versus door storage? I'm leaning towards more drawers instead of door storage on the lowers. Would love to hear any advice on where to start with this! Thank you!

We went for a mix with more doors than drawers. We have one 30" cabinet that has three drawers, with two of them being deeper. We keep the Tupperware in one and the Corning Ware in another. The top drawer holds whisks, lades, can openers, etc. This works well for us. Step back and take a look at what you have to store, where you want to store it and how you want to get to it and that will give you an idea of how many drawers vs. doors to have.

The two things I would definitely look at having are a lower cabinet with dividers for pizza pans, cutting boards, etc. and a pull out spice rack.

i did a mix but the doors actually have rollout trays behind them. i find it easier to get small appliances off of a pull out tray (with 2" sides) than out of a deeper drawer, where loose items tend to collect around them.

These are the color we are going to choose from. Our living room got one side is all window as shown in the picture. One side has two doors towards kitchen and a small storage room. We would like to put the Sofa in the middle to divide the living room into living area and dining area. Also we would like to paint the wall into a different shades than the rest of the room. Hi joyce_jj_chen, lovely home! Sharing my 2 cents: I think you've got a great living/dining space with lots of potential. The sofas can be moved closer to the TV to make space for dining. While not exactly a matching for your floor plan, this is a possible inspiration: Given the ample amount of reflective materials in your space (floors, mirrors), I'd go for some soft or matte textured furnishings or to balance things out and give the entire space coziness and warmth. Possible inspirations: Here it's the curtains that diffuse light that comes into the apartment, matte dark walls absorb and soften light, while greenery lifts the entire space. The example you've suggested is lovely, all the more so because of a contrast between matte (cabinetry, kitchen island) and shiny (fixtures, kitchen island countertop) and of course lovely warm lighting overhead. (consider using warm lighting instead of cool white?) For dramatic effect, or simply to add more warmth, a large rug is a good idea too: Hope this helps, I'm sure other will have great ideas too.

I started with a design dilemma, and got some good advice from some very kind people on Houzz. The transformation took more time to figure out then it did to complete the construction. My advice to anyone wanting a new space is to do your research, without rushing into decisions, which can be difficult when working with some, because of the 'sale deadline'! Guess what? There will always be another sale! In fact, by taking my time I ended up being able to keep all of the organization options I wanted and ended up with such a great sale that I was able to upgrade to custom solid wood cabinets and drawers for the same price as my original stock cabinets with MDF panels. By customizing the sizes of cabinets, I was able to create more space to open up the small kitchen for a spacious feel. My contractor helped me achieve the built in pantry wall which puts all of my spices, canned goods, etc., right in front of me to see exactly what I have or need to replenish. But, my favorite part of this kitchen is what the contractor did with my narrow and deep closet. It was widened and turned into a dry bar with microwave and roll out storage. Having a place for my coffee maker and microwave was key, so I could keep the new expanse of counter space visible! Removing the 'bump up' wall of my original counter offered a more open concept feel, which was a great improvement. Drawers are becoming more popular -- they mean less leaning over in order to find your pots and pans. Pull-outs inside doors are also popular, but of course you have to open both. Think about the actual things you want to store -- for example, a food processor might not fit in a drawer, but could fit easily in a cupboard with a partial-depth shelf (the standard). So you tailor your mix to the things you have.

I help customers with this a-LOT!

Basically, you need to answer a couple of questions; 1) do you struggle with finding things in the usual base cabinets with drawer above and shelf behind two doors below? If so, would it be more convenient to have the things stored on that shelf, slide out to you, to make things more accessible?? (this is called a 'slide out shelf, or SOS unit) If yes again, then one more question; Do you want to open two doors in order to slide out the shelves?, because, you can have the same convenience without the door hassle by having full width drawers. For example, I often build a Cook top base cabinet with two deep drawers underneath, the perfect place for all of your pots and pans, skillets, lids and even griddles. To one side or the other (or both!) is a perfect place for slide out spice drawers or mini pantry's. Near the oven is a great place to have a large roll out drawer, that is divided to store baking sheets, pizza pans, cutting boards, heavy griddles, etc., and don't forget the trash can.... trash roll outs are very functional, easy to clean, and can be built to hold extra trash bags, or even multiple containers for recycling!

I understand that the "look" can be everything, and some folks just don't like the look of a bunch of drawers, but just as important, as a designer, is the symmetry or balance of things. A dishwasher on one side of the sink cabinet lends to placing a utility door, or door and drawer cabinet of similar size on the other side. This cabinet can be for trash cans, for baking pan organization, or a SOS cabinet.

I'd sure suggest that you work with a cabinet design place, and try to get a feel for the 'look' of what your kitchen space can be. Be sure to prioritize your wants and needs, so functional design can be incorporated. (if you bake a lot, a double oven and an appliance lift for your kitchen aide mixer might be very important to you!)

A lot of the Kitchens I have been doing lately are all drawers for the bases,customers seem to really like them.I would even look at the corner drawers,I think they are much better than a Lazy Suzan.
