Flooring advise

I want to go to wood flooring in my new house but I have many light colored woods including shutters and same tone in my furniture. Low ceilings and not a lot of natural light. I was thinking go dark barn wood so that I don't have the lighter wood overwhelm the house but I don't know if it will close us in and make the room seem really small. I want to run it through out the bottom floor and up the stairs. Photo is at night.

Comments (4)Marble are both non-porous thus it would cause etching and corrosion. Besides that, marble are high maintenance materials. Marble requires proper care and maintenance. Acid should never be used on marble as it shall loose its shine. Marble should be regularly polished over a period of time to give it a new look. If proper precautions are not taken the marble becomes yellowish in colour. Italian marble is usually very soft and prone to cracks. Proper resins have to be used to make the surface strong and solid and avoid further cracks. Proper sealants should be used in marble flooring as the marble is highly porous and prone to staining. It absorbs stains very quickly especially kitchen stains hence are not appropriate for kitchen counter tops. In the long run, wooden looking tiles (made of porcelain or ceramic) would be more practical. You can also consider marble looking quartz. You may check out the D & L series of iQuartz range. Comments (1)Hi Lucie, Cork flooring is an excellent product for any interior. A "down stairs" area (when speaking of cork) is a "floating floor" installation. Cork/rubber combinations are all the rage at this time because of the durability/cushion. I also know the price is SIGNIFICANT when working with rubber or rubber/cork combinations. For the price of a rubber floor, you can choose a high end solid hardwood. The drawback to rubber = smell/off gassing. Even a revulcanized rubber (they burn it again to get rid of more of the smell) can still leave an unpleasant odour for quite a long time. When rubber is in direct sunlight or heat is added, the smell returns. Rubber will deteriorate in direct sunlight = crumbling. Cork will simply "fade" but not crumble. In a place like Tahoe where nature is revered, a cork floor would be a better compliment to the surroundings. Rubber can be more modern/industrial looking. Cork floating floors can go everywhere except a bathroom. This is where the glue down cork tiles come into play. Cork floating flooring can start as low as $2.29/sf and range into the $15 per square foot range (depending on the dealer). At icorkfloor.com the highest priced cork floor is the printed cork at $4.59/sf...the rest are below $4/sf. Rubber underlay starts at $4/sf and the flooring doubles that price and then ranges much higher. I would find out about VOC testing for the rubber products you are looking to use. Comments (2)Hi Ah Jun congrats on having a new home! My humble thoughts; 1) storage really is individual liking. I didn't do too much cabinets and wardrobes and I regret it. Space is important, but design can make space look bigger even with storage 2) flooring is important, have to see what kind of theme you want for the house. Recommend you see the designs you have in mind and mix and match 3) your induction cooker is built in? Will there be hood and hob? I don't recommend cooking in service yard cause of clothings and all though. 4) open kitchen can look spacious, but also can don't fully hack to have space for cabinets. Also if you cook do you do heavy cooking all the time? Cleaning is another thing to ponder. 5)are you looking at combining master and common 2? Can consider walkin wardrobe also. if you keen we can have a better discussion on this. :)...See More
