will a kitchen island actually work?

we just moved and i bought a beautiful kitchen island from world market for 50% off. i really LOVE the kitchen island, but am unsure about whether the space plan for the kitchen can accommodate it. Thanks in advance for your advice! photos of the kitchen are included below.

Comments (5)David - Thanks! Appreciate that you even drew out the plan. :) You are absolutely right, it's been difficult finding an optimum layout. In fact, our current layout is more or less the same as your plan. Would you have chosen different furniture - a smaller sofa or a different dining table perhaps? (Also, I'm curious: is there a good reason why the architect had the pillar like that?) Mona - Do you mean having a buffet at the entry? I currently do have a sideboard, though it wouldn't fit at the entry - it's about 67" wide by 18" deep. It's currently placed in the middle of the long wall. There's actually still sufficient clearance between it and the 3-seater sofa in David's plan. plague - The household shelter is a local (Singapore) building requirement. Its walls are reinforced and is meant to be a shelter in times of emergency. It can't be removed, and any renovations carried out cannot affect its integrity (there is a list of permitted and prohibited works). Comments (6)Hello everyone, thank you for your comments. It is my first time using Houzz forum so I'm pleasantly surprised by the responses. My furniture: I have mainly neutral tone furnitures (white B&B fat fat coffee tables, B&B Solo couch with light grey textured upholstery, Eames LCW chair in birch, an opaque glass rectangular dining table with black metal legs, Starck Lizz white dining chairs, and light brown leather bed frame, Cassina Utreche dark brown leather armchairs, etc) and I spice it up with red/colorful accessories (red Vitra elephant stool, red Vitra ball clock, orange smeg fridge, etc). Hope you don't mind me going into details on the furniture. I hope to give you all an idea of how my space looks like for better advice on the curtains. I prefer curtains to blinds because I find blinds difficult to clean (I prefer to be able to wash my curtains). I agree that grey may not be a lasting colour. My current curtains are off white/beige. I have my day curtains in organza with some designs on it and night curtains in 100% cotton. However, I realize that I do get tired of the print on the day curtains so I want to try a plain one for my new home. In additon, I want more light to come through the day curtains. For the night curtains, I'm trying to avoid cotton since I realize that it shrinks easily (even dry cleaning). My curtain maker says polyester has less shrinkage and are easier to wash and does not trap dust unlike cotton. I'm toying with the idea of the linen like fabric for a slightly different feel but I've not seen this in actual curtains before and I'm worried it may not turn out well. For organza, I know it will be a safe choice. I'm torn between being on the safe side (but almost everyone else will have similar day curtains in our condo) or trying the linen. Comments (8)Hi 4eva zx, It's not optimum if you don't want to build a bespoke TV wall/console where I've placed the TV here (suggest that you get something where you can swivel the TV towards the sofa, or slightly extend that wall so the TV can be directly in front of the sofa), but in terms of spatial efficiency, your round table would be better placed like so: This is so that it's near the kitchen and you can use it for meals for more than two people. This placement will also allow you to make this family heirloom a visual focal point and conversation piece for your home. If you ever need to use a bigger table for gatherings with more people, you can simply put a rectangular top onto the round table and seat 6-8 people – the placement provides for space that allows this. Find a good ID or decorator who will work towards incorporating this family heirloom in your new home, and you'll be able to enjoy it for years to come. Hope this helps!...See More
