can you mix hardware finishes

I am building a new home and am getting ready to pick out door hardware and faucets. I am wanting to mix polished chrome and brushed nickel faucets with black or aged bronze door knobs? I am going for a rustic/country look.

I wouldn't be too concerned about mixing the finishes for door knobs and lighting/plumbing fixtures. This happens often by default...you don't want to use different door hardware for a single door in the hallway because that room has nickel fixtures.

It is great that you are considering these issues though. I would discuss your specific questions with your builder/designer. They should be able to offer a solution based on previous projects or past experience.

I've never given a thought to my doorknobs working with my other fixtures. But mixing shiny & brushed finishes doesn't work for me. I have stainless appliances in my kitchen with brushed nickel faucets and light fixtures, but the cabinets hardware is an oil rubbed bronze with coppery highlights. Seems to work because the bronze looks better with the wood cabinets and the nickel looks good with the granite.

These colours will definitely give a touch of elegance and express a modern look theme! I have stained concrete floors and not only do I love them... but 95% of everyone that walks in the door goes goo goo over them... Well, there was that one guest that waited a half hour before asking "So, when you do you think you'll be able to afford carpet?" .... So, this isn't a great pic, but you can see that we mixed black in and that there's a greenish border... Looking back, I would have done a different color had I given it more thought because it's a lot of work to change stained concrete... but painted concrete can be painted over and over... By the way...The lower level of my house is 1500 sq ft and I vacuum those concrete floors, all of them, in less than 15 minutes... I was 2 x's a year and including stripping the old wax, it only takes me about three hours! This shine when it's done is SO worth the 3 hours ...

Hi Rubypumps. Unfortunately you have made the common mistake of mixing undertones. I see this a lot as a colour consultant. Mistakes with your hard finishes are the worst kind because they are very costly to change. Right now your walls have a pink undertone and your walls behind the tub and counter are clearly blue grey. Since blue is complementary to pink, it brings out the pink in the tile even more and the clean blue makes the tile look dirty. It may be hard for you to see this, but this is what's happening and this is probably why you don't like your bathroom. Since you chose such a busy mosaic, it has become the boss (and focal point) of the room and I would now keep your other finishes as simple as possible. If you can, down the road, change the beige tile. Because unfortunately, there is no magic colour combination that will make it disappear. Working with what you have, I would most likely go with a more neutral cabinet like Uniboard G21 Viva Walnut. It will help warm up the space. Black is too stark for this bathroom.

I take it this isn't your bathroom. The glass could be handmade lead light which means bespoke by someone who makes lead light windows or it could be a transfer applied to a plain glass window. Check on ebay or online sticker/transfer stores for similar. I've never seen a piece like that in Australia so I'm thinking this might be an American antique. It's not normal to put an expensive antique piece in a bathroom and if you did it would be best in a bathroom that only has minimal use. And you would want to have a lot of good exhaust extraction to get rid of moisture. If you picked up one of those repro Indonesian mahogany pieces you would be spending a lot less money and might regard the piece as expendable. You can buy wood hardening sprays that resist moisture from the hardware store and spray the carcass (all the unstained pieces inside) with this stuff to resist moisture. You'd still need a good exhaust system however and keep the room well aired.

There is no "Golden Rule" on mixing different finishes on hardware. It all comes down to personal preferences. If you are okay with mixing silver tones with earth tones, then by all means feel free to mix the two together. Most of the time people see door hardware separate from the plumbing fixtures anyhow. There is also the option to split finish all your bathroom doors where the hallway side might be in your darker finish and inside the bath you can use the polished chrome or satin nickel.
