Working on Master Bedroom & Lounge

I've arranged to speak with a few IDs next month to work on my 4-room BTO. As we all know, HDBs can be rather small so I was thinking of knocking down the wall between the master BR and the adjoining BR to create a bigger space so we can have a huge wardrobe and a nice lounge area to chill before bedtime. My hubby on the other hand thinks that it's better to have an entertainment room separately with a large wardrobe in there. I know cost-wise, my hubby's idea would be cheaper, but it just doesn't feel right for me... What do you guys think?

Hi Hudayah,

I actually did just that and broke down the wall between my master bedroom and the adjoining room. The space that was once the adjoining room now has a big wardrobe and a long study+dressing table.

I had at first begun typing a paragraph against the idea of a lounge area but as I thought about it more, I like it! The way I see it, it might help get me out of bed in the mornings to sleepily drink my coffee on the lounge chair instead of flopping back down on my pillows and it'll give me an alternative place to sit when I don't want to mess up my immaculately-made (not really) bed.

By the way, when you said 'entertainment room', did you mean tv, sound system, gaming console, etc.?

Hey oscolaidhe,

Yes, I really liked the idea of having an area to chill out in the bedroom other than lazing around on the bed. Reading in bed makes me really sleepy. Plus chasing up on my k-dramas in bed for hours is going to give me an aching back.

And by entertainment room, yes my hubby was thinking of a full home theatre installation, ie sound system, his gaming consoles, projector etc. I don't really like my man's idea to be real honest!

You mean general lighting? Ambient light is whatever lighting happens to be spilling into the space. Could even be from outdoors or another room. Lighting is generally divided into general, task and accent lighting. General usually being overhead and providing a base level of illumination. Task being things like lamps, vanity lights or pendants-anything helping u see better. And accent being anything used to accent or emphasize something. Sometimes the categories run together like under cabinet lights which are both task and accent. So in order to figure out what the right fixture or lamp is you have to determine is it for general, accent or task purposes. Fluorescent tubes make great general light in an office or workspace but poor task or accent light in a family room. Similarly lots of recessed lights work well in kitchens but are usually too much in bedrooms where you typically don't need much general lighting. A good vanity fixture might fulfill all three in a powder room but in a master bathroom you might need some recessed cans to provide task lighting over the shower or tub. A lamp might be enough in a bedroom but not enough for a heavy task area like a laundry room. You get the idea. It's less about the fixture and more about how it's being used.

No lah, it's important your hubby has his own relaxation area just like you'd have your lounge area. :) Sometimes we need to have our own spaces.

Does your hubby not want the entertainment system to be in the living room? If you're worried about the sight of electronics marring your decor, your ID should be able to come up with clever spaces/tricks to store consoles and hide wires.

Here's the arrangement in my home: our tv, soundbar, subwoofer and PS4 are in the living room. Having them in the living room comes in useful for guests if we all want to watch a movie, or if they sometimes want to have a go at the PS4 (I sometimes play too!). In our bedroom, we have a Wi-Fi speaker (that integrates with the sound system in the living room) and a PC with a huge desktop monitor for my hubby's PC games or general computer usage. But all the appliances are not an eyesore at all because they're sleek and my hubby is very neat when it comes to cable management.

Anyway, think about your routine and imagine yourselves using the spaces you want to create to get a better idea of how to create them. :)
