Kitchen - Exposed Pipes

Can you tell us how you dealt with the steam pipe in an awkward location? From photo it looks like you wrapped it with some type of rope.

Yes, correct. The steam pipe was wrapped with a natural rope (jute). It is a solution often used in residential and commercial spaces.

I have a steam pipe to right of my stove and next to it is the opening of a doorway that leads to a dining room. I was thinking of closing up the door and doing a line of cabinets but I think it will be a problem in the future if we ever need access. I live in a coop. Are your cabinets and counters wrapped around that pipe as well? Looking for solutions as that pipe is right next to stove like in picture.

Am planning to install a worktop Alkaline Water Ionizer in my yet-to-be-constructed dry kitchen. Do not like the unsightly tubes/pipes connected to the faucet. Can anyone advise if I can drill a grommet hole and link the tube from my hot water inlet (to tap mixer) to my machine? I am not planning to have hot water for use in my sink area.

@Kayla: I love IKEA hacking too! ;) Hiding the game consoles is definitely a possibility; I can't put the speakers in a cabinet though.. It's a deal breaker for the hubs. Invest in a high quality sound system, the speakers have to be out for acoustic reasons. If only I had known that before I agreed so easily.. ;-/ @groveraxle: I love that example! You're probably right about the shelves.. there's already too much going on on that wall! I'll look into wall art instead. ;) And yes! Now I realize that part of what was annoying me was that crazy up down profile. I'll have to try and streamline it as much as possible. Maybe put one of the small rear speakers on the left with a trailing plant on top to hide it; a small end cabinet around the same height on the right for the other speaker and to make room to clear off the top of the console? @Mystic Home: That's lovely!! Using electronics as a plant stand, vase to soften the look of that speaker, putting the speaker in an end cabinet.. genius! That might be the best (and cheapest) way to make everything "disappear". I can always paint it white again when we leave. I'll run it by the hubs and the landlord. Thanks ;)) thank you all keep the ideas coming! ~<3

Constance and the Creative Mind Design team, you've done an amazing job in restoring a heritage house, and shining a light on a precious family story! The original house is clearly well built for the environment: large overhanging roof, windows tucked neatly under. Love the rusticated exterior and the big arches in the porte cochere too. Haunted only to those who don't know the story! I also love that the original house has been updated to serve the needs of the current, without forgetting the past. Those pink mosaic tiles and wrought iron grilles fit in very nicely in the new house. The airwell seems to bridge the new and old worlds perfectly too.

I've done a few similar units and created an island. The wc area has too many utilities (waste pipes etc) to be fully removed, plus living in a Maisonette myself, I find it practical to keep a powder room downstairs. You could push the wall between the front door (if you are able to purchase the access area, you can move the front door out as well for even more foyer space). In its place could be full height cabinets as well as your fridge. At the back wall you could plan your basin and hob on the island (or the other way around). My preference is to place a glass wall and door to the yard, so you have the washing machine away from the kitchen and another layer between the kitchen and the powder room. The chute is contained then as well, which works pretty ok. Your laundry will be out of sight if the glass is frosted, but still provides plenty of light. It requires a bit of planning, but you can create a fantastic and practical space. Good luck with your renovation, Arjan
