Tiny tween bedroom

My sister (11YO) has been landed with the smallest room in the house & my parents and I are trying to plan a way to utilise the little space so that she doesn't feel so cramped.

We don't need to worry about wardrobe storage as she has a big IKEA PAX wardrobe between the room and her bathroom.

It is a simple square shape, with one large (almost floor to ceiling) window on one wall & built into the walls there are bookshelves on with side of one wall.

We were thinking about a mezzanine as if she has a normal bed on the floor there's hardly space for a desk & small storage unit... but the room also has VERY low ceilings (under 9ft) so we're unsure if a mezzanine would be possible if she wanted to have a desk underneath.

She currently has a loft bed (caravan style) but she finds it limits the natural light in her room & makes it seem even smaller, so that's why we thought a mezzanine would give her the bed space without obstructing the window & light coming into her room too much.

What would you do/recommend?

I was going to suggest a mezzanine too. My son built one for my grandson so he has loads of floor space to play.

Without a plan of the space it's difficult to say whether a mezzanine would work but they have many of the drawbacks of loft beds. With such low ceilings and a tiny room you might be best off looking at folding beds (Murphy beds). You can buy off the shelf beds which transform into desks with no need to keep taking all the stuff of the desk or remove all the bedding (I think you'd need to take off the duvet though). Have a look at StudyBed.co.uk for an example. They're expensive but then fitting a mezzanine would be too.

Alternatively there are various plans for Murphy beds which a local carpenter (or good DIYer) could follow or adapt for less. One possibility would be folding bed on one wall and desk on the opposite wall.

I would have thinner bedside tables and then have your dressing table else where in the room....if not Maybe a nice romantic chair ..the other side

Hi Amuro Elaine, Are you working with an interior designer to renovate your home? You'll probably be asked a few questions such as: How many people will live here? Is the bedroom wall a structural, load-bearing wall? Do you intend to entertain? But what an interesting space you have, and especially if you are living alone, there's so much potential to transforming it into your own pretty pad! If I were you, I would swap the living space with the bedroom, that means hacking the bedroom wall open, and then erecting a wall from that point where your kitchen wall ends. Have the wall in glass, with sliding glass doors, so that you can open it up when you have guests over. And when you're alone, you'll be able to enjoy the entire length of the apartment from your bed. Here's a photo of the wall idea:Keep us posted on the progress of your renovation, please :)

I'm not a pro (and I hope a real designer answers your question), but here's how my family does it in Singapore: 1. Get rid of things. Don't fall prey to sunk cost fallacies. Just because you bought a piece of furniture or a bunch of clothing or books or toys or whatever, doesn't mean you need to keep them if they are no longer working for you. You can sell stuff on Carousell or donate them to needy people. Sometimes not having those things will provide more value, by freeing up space, than the false belief that you need to keep things around because you paid for them. 2. Everything should be multi-function. Especially here in Singapore, everything should have multiple uses. Your bed can lift up to provide storage. Your book shelf can also be your entertainment stand. Your coffee table can double as a breakfast nook or homework table. No tool in your kitchen should be a one-job tool (for example, if you have a blender, a food processor, a spice grinder, an immersion blender, a coffee grinder and a mortar and pestle - maybe it's time to clean out the kitchen cabinets). 3. Rotate toys We have a baby at home and try really hard not to accumulate too many toys. To do that we have two toy bins. Every two weeks we switch the bin that's in rotation, so every two weeks our baby gets "new" toys that he hasn't seen for a few weeks. That allows us to keep the total number of toys to a minimum and he seems to be pretty happy (and hasn't caught on to this trick yet). Hope that helps some. It's hard to judge which solution may work the best without seeing the space, if possible please could you add some pictures?

A mezzanine is a good idea, however you have mentioned about the very low ceiling, maybe you should consider also an alternative option which is a raised platform with pull out hidden bed. This solution will work very well in the small spaces. Please see some images below.

I like the trundle beds!

I think you are looking at some sort of transforming bed here, with the low ceiling heights going up isn't so practical.
