What color(s) to pull from fabric and use in a neutral room.
This fabric is on a chair & ottoman. Everything else in the room is neutral beige: walls, carpet, drapes.
A sofa is also beige, but darker than the other items and does have red undertones. What color or colors should be pulled from this fabric and used elsewhere in the room? I'm not sure I want anything red even though it dominates, more or less. The reds range from barn red to very deep red. I may purchase another chair... what color??

Comments (6)Hello everyone, thank you for your comments. It is my first time using Houzz forum so I'm pleasantly surprised by the responses. My furniture: I have mainly neutral tone furnitures (white B&B fat fat coffee tables, B&B Solo couch with light grey textured upholstery, Eames LCW chair in birch, an opaque glass rectangular dining table with black metal legs, Starck Lizz white dining chairs, and light brown leather bed frame, Cassina Utreche dark brown leather armchairs, etc) and I spice it up with red/colorful accessories (red Vitra elephant stool, red Vitra ball clock, orange smeg fridge, etc). Hope you don't mind me going into details on the furniture. I hope to give you all an idea of how my space looks like for better advice on the curtains. I prefer curtains to blinds because I find blinds difficult to clean (I prefer to be able to wash my curtains). I agree that grey may not be a lasting colour. My current curtains are off white/beige. I have my day curtains in organza with some designs on it and night curtains in 100% cotton. However, I realize that I do get tired of the print on the day curtains so I want to try a plain one for my new home. In additon, I want more light to come through the day curtains. For the night curtains, I'm trying to avoid cotton since I realize that it shrinks easily (even dry cleaning). My curtain maker says polyester has less shrinkage and are easier to wash and does not trap dust unlike cotton. I'm toying with the idea of the linen like fabric for a slightly different feel but I've not seen this in actual curtains before and I'm worried it may not turn out well. For organza, I know it will be a safe choice. I'm torn between being on the safe side (but almost everyone else will have similar day curtains in our condo) or trying the linen. Comments (10)Just wondering what is the current wall color? Looks lavender. I'm not a fan of accent walls in a bedroom. To me a bedroom should be relaxing and varying wall colors seem stimulating by their very nature (think they're great in other rooms though). But if you want to do one, I would do as you suggested, the wall where your headboard is located. Figure out what you want to keep (sounds like the headboard and the red chair are definitely staying), then work around that. I think cool greys are very pretty and a wonderful neutral that work would work well with your headboard and chair. Then you could bring in the other colors you like through bedding and artwork. If storage is an issue, can you get some bins on wheels for beneath your bed? Also can you consolidate all those smaller tables and get one larger table/storage piece in its place? I would check out IKEA if it's in your budget. Also given the size of your bedroom, if possible I would go with simple curtains that are the same color as your walls. Comments (13)Hi Rubypumps. Unfortunately you have made the common mistake of mixing undertones. I see this a lot as a colour consultant. Mistakes with your hard finishes are the worst kind because they are very costly to change. Right now your walls have a pink undertone and your walls behind the tub and counter are clearly blue grey. Since blue is complementary to pink, it brings out the pink in the tile even more and the clean blue makes the tile look dirty. It may be hard for you to see this, but this is what's happening and this is probably why you don't like your bathroom. Since you chose such a busy mosaic, it has become the boss (and focal point) of the room and I would now keep your other finishes as simple as possible. If you can, down the road, change the beige tile. Because unfortunately, there is no magic colour combination that will make it disappear. Working with what you have, I would most likely go with a more neutral cabinet like Uniboard G21 Viva Walnut. It will help warm up the space. Black is too stark for this bathroom....See More

5 years agoSo many directions with this! And photos definitely would help, not to mention your preference in styles. You can start with a rug and go from there for your other choices. I always like rugs like these because they pull together colors and anchor your room. But if you prefer pattern on your curtains, look for something that has the beiges and navy with a little bittersweet orange. You can always add a throw, pillows, or other items in an accent color to liven the look.

5 years agoDo you have pix of the chairs for us? More pix of the rest of the walls too, please. IMO, end tables plus coffee table, especially matching ones, are a bit dated, but you might translate that as traditional. End tables are also too short (see chart below) and the lamps are from the 1980's I believe. If you want a rug, it should be at least 2 feet wider than the sofa and slip under the front 1/3 of it, so I'd find other locations for the end tables. If you need light near the sofa, try a floor lamp in the corner by it. Locating the chairs will determine where you might use a new table and lamp.

5 years agoThese are the chairs, positioned on the wall with 2 windows; but my chairs are deeper blue (light navy). Grover photo-shopped the picture and included the artwork between the windows for consideration as well as the coffee table, pillows, lamp etc. Thanks everyone for your past help. I plan to look for fabric to make throw pillows - fabric that includes rich deep coralish-orangish colors.
Unless I find pillows. Would like the room to look cozy, but not beachy or modern & richer tones than the coral in the photo.

Might prompt additional advice that takes into account the whole room's vibe.Here's an ivory and blue living room from Suzanne Kasler and Les Cole. A narrow range of blues, including navy, lots of white and ivory, touches of beige, brown and gold and a LOT of natural light.
