Would love some suggestions for a new rug and ottoman- this room looks bare- and not sure how to decorate!! Please help

Agree with the others who say you should move your sofa forward, or try against window wall. Larger art to balance out the shelves, curtains, pillows and I put an ottoman with your room since it looks like small children use it.

It is a little hard to offer ideas as there aren't enough pictures to get an idea of the layout of the room and traffic. However, here are some tips on rugs and furniture. Your furniture pieces should have at least their front two legs on the rug. This means you will want a rug big enough for all pieces of furniture to connect with the rug. I am suggesting a rug bigger than the one you presently have. A highly textured rug in lighter colors of cream, beige, etc would offer a sophisticated look for this room. It appears there may not be much light, so keep the room light. You could also incorporate some of the green from the walls in the rug. Nice sectional but I am not sure what it is facing, perhaps a television.

Any picture suggestions for a rug and additional furniture are welcome..would like to keep the sectional- just don’t know how to get it to all fit together

Use painter's tape on the floor and tape out a "rug" that slips under the front 1/3 of the seats on the sofa and entirely under the chaise side. The "rug should extend past the right and left sides of the entire sofa by a foot or more. If that is not a standard size rug, then go up to the next standard size. Once you figure that out you'll know the footprint of your seating area and we can decide just how to locate it in the room for traffic flow and the best view of TV. Is your chaise reversible?

Unfortunately the chaise isn’t reversible..as for rug size an 8x10 or slightly bigger spans under the legs to the area you mention...would an ottoman work in this room?

have you tried pulling the sectional away from the bookcase and making the walkway between the back of he sofa and bookcase. Then place the bookcase in the middle of the wall. (removing the small picture). Put the legs of the sectional on the rug.

Try moving the sofa (sectional?) under the window. Hang one or two large pieces of art on the wall to the left of the bookcases to create some symmetry. If you can, get some sort of credenza for under the tv. It's floating on the wall. You could use the credenza for toy storage if needed. Once you have figured out the room layout, then look at rugs and window coverings. Good luck!

An oriental rug has enough colors in it to relate to both the sectional and the wall color. You just need to find a much larger rug with the right colors. There are manufactured Orientals and hand-knotted Orientals. Go to several area rug stores in your city or the nearest big city in your area for the best selection. In my opinion, a sectional looks best if the entire "L" fits on the rug. Take with you 1) a sample of the wall color painted on a whiteboard or some wallboard and
2) three color photos of your sectional taken from different angles, and 3) the full set of measurements of your sectional.

You do have another issue: the thing that looks like a radiator near the fireplace.

It seems like that shelving unit in the back is barely used but as for breaking up the space , the white of the fireplace seemed a good base to add more shelves in unique squared arch patterns on each side. This example doesn't exactly match the widths but its cut/pasted from a kitchen cabinet set over the stove hood. Then I put zone curtains in to keep the heat in one place ; One is transparent to show the shelving behind it

Rug is 7'6"x10. May be a little small for your room.

IT would be a good idea to pull the sectional out from the bookcase. Perhaps you would like to consider a wood coffee table. this will add some texture variety, since the sectional is a lot of fabric. Also, it appears you have children. A coffee table would provide another play surface for them, perhaps one with some storage in it. As for the rug, select one that has the colors of your wall and fireplace. Green goes beautifully with your wood floors. Choose a style that reflects your personal style. If you select a contemporary style rug (like the abstract 8' x 10') then select contemporary pictures as well. I would avoid an oriental rug as the style would not be in harmony with the architecture of the room. You are asking questions about "looks" for the room. This is something you may want to give some self reflection to. What do YOU like? A truly comfortable room must reflect your sense of style. You have a great start.

Thank you everyone for your suggestion!I settled on a rug, thanks to kulrn- now need some help bringing the room together...

Feel like my tv stand looks odd, not sure about artwork for walls and above fireplace, pillows

Also- I have kids- thinking about a storage ottoman for the center- but not sure about size and if it’s too much for the room?

It might be worth a try. Hopefully, the sofa doesn't end up too close to the t.v. Maybe you could use the area behind the sofa for your little one's toys and table.

VERY off scale, but just to show about how moving the sofa up may work. The traffic will be where the arrows are. Back wall storage/console play area....

And the smaller TV stand may not be too bad that way. Though the TV may look better lowered to right above the stand and centered.
