Kitchen Cabinets (New and Old)

I am trying to figure out if I can redo my kitchen by painting the existing cabinets. I hate the island though, so I wanted to rip it out and put in a new one. I can't find the exact cabinets I have now. I want to do the existing cabinets white, and put in a new island with a royal/navy blue cabinets. How do I figure our what cabinet faces will go with the old ones? Go totally different style or try and "almost match" them? I don't want to regret my choices! What type can I match with my existing? HELP :) The first two photos are of current cabinets. The third picture is of the backsplash tile I like, the white color for cabinets, new countertops, and the blue color I'd like for the new island! The floors will be staying the same.

Great tile and countertop selection!

It can be quite the challenge to pair two almost-alike cabinets. It often looks like an afterthought or mistake when the door profiles are similar but not exact. The recommendation would be to go with something completely different from your existing cabinets but still cohesive in style. Consider more of a furniture piece:

This would be a great way to add warmth with the exposed wood grain amongst your newly painted cabinetry.

They feel very ornate for the style you seem to be going for. Have you considered maybe just refacing with more shaker style doors?

I would seriously consider replacing the cabinets before putting a new granite countertop on them. The problem is that no one will remove the countertop at a later date if you want to change the cabinets, due to the possibility of breakage. The only choice you will have then is a reface. Adding new doors, drawer fronts, and veneered sides is just a facelift. You could also add new hardwood drawers with undermount cushion close slides, but by the time you do this if will be the same cost as new cabinets now. The cabinets you have now, frameless, particle board sides are notorious for having the hinge screws strip out the particle board they are attached to. Since you can't put a longer screw in them, because the material is only 3/4" of an inch thick you have a problem. You also can't put a wider screw in them because it won't fit through the pre-drilled holes in the hinges.

Hello there :) Nice design by the way. Perhaps you can: 1. Change the door panels only. Keep the existing shape & the cupboards, the carpenter can 'update' the doors with different handles too (like image above). 2. Spray paint is more $$$ but I think it is longer lasting. 3. Laminated is less $$ but as we all know it chips & eventually the laminate comes out (wear & tear). 4. Unless you want the inside of the cabinet to be changed from existing white to a different colour, then the carpenter have to dismantle everything & redo. So more $$$$ Hope this helps & Happy shopping!

Agree w/Nanke Signature Group -- where you need new cabinets, don't try to match the old.

Are you on a tight budget for the upgrade? If not, and since you like white, consider removing all the doors and painting all the frames white and then replacing the doors with doors you like, using the same hinges and same hinge holes but choosing new knobs and/or handles you like.

If you will be needing to repair/replace the flooring if/when you rip out your island, keep that in mind as you make your plans -- especially as to cost consideration. Also, if you're planning to redo your floor, you may want to go ahead and redo the entire floor, including where the island is currently located rather than only redo around the base of the island …

... If you want different "cabinets" in your island anyway, you might consider something other than a built in cabinet -- perhaps a rolling cart table or cabinet. There are a large variety of styles and a wide range of prices.

Is there ANY single cabinet door (or pair of doors) to your existing cabinets if needed, you could remove the door(s) entirely and use the open shelving if the doors didn't refinish as you hoped? If so, if you want to find out if you can refinish or repaint your existing cabinets, test what you want to do with that door(s).

Not sure on budget yet, just beginning to think about things. The space is large (maybe 2,000 sq ft), but open into the living room. I will attach more photos. I am hoping to paint the wainscoting in the living room white, except leaving the base board and the two arch ways in the current wood color, so the rest of the house still flows. The spot where the kitchen table is, I want to make a "coffee/reading nook". I am thinking of adding two chaise lounge and a table in that space. I like the idea of having different cabinets for the island, I am just nervous that someone will come in and think it looks "off". My go to kitchen style is European farmhouse (my previous homes), but the current cabinets won't go with that. I was thinking of just doing something plain like the shaker look in the picture like Nanke put. Since it is a large Island, I don't think I would have glass, but I love the way it looks in that picture! I SO appreciate all the input already! Thank you :) Keep it coming!

As you can see from the photos, the "furniture" idea would be hard to find for the large space Nanke Signature Group and suezbell but I like the thought. Another possibility could be to do two Islands.

Really nice home.

If the wood on the wall in the living room is not damaged, please don't paint it. It looks great. Remember that anything that is painted will, inevitably, need to be repainted and can get to looking pretty awful as it gets that way.

Would NOT do two islands; instead:

Since you're wanting to remove/replace the existing island anyway, you might want to consider adding a peninsula and an island and use the peninsula as a bar … which means you'd need to build it farther from the current wall cabinets than your current island so you could put an island in between.

Invest in a tablet of graph paper and, with #2 pencil (and a good eraser at the ready) draw, to scale, the entire kitchen/dining area that you have. Including in your drawing any item that you want/need to stay where it is: windows, doors, walls, posts -- even draw in the stove and refrigerator and sink as well as any cabinets (such as those against any wall) you want to keep/replace with other wall cabinets. Draw everything that needs to stay where it is and leave out anything about which you are "flexible" -- leave as blank space any part of the room(s) you are still considering changes as to what you want where.

Drawing what you want where within that that blank space, placing it where it best suits your lifestyle and taste, is your challenge.

Love your color selections. We have an island that is just open shelving. The shelves are faced in stainless steel. We use it to store our pots and pans, and cook books. It's perfect for that. If you do something with open shelves you won't have cabinets to match.

Don’t try to remuddle a classic look into a fad that is already fading. You have a great kitchen. Throwing 50K into it to do a makeover remuddle won’t do a single positive thing for its function, or your pocketbook.

If you hate it that badly, starts planning the 130K redo that it will take to replace it all to that level.

What is it that you hate about the island and what is your vision for replacement?

Wondering because I would be thinking about keeping the sink side cabinets, making the island all one level, nixing the seating and adding glass front cabinets to the living area side. Since you're painting the island, IMO, you should be able to find 'close enough' glass front cabinets for the front.

OR, if you want seating, then have a table like aproned extension built at counter top level, perhaps using parts from whatever is on the seating side of existing cabs. Pix are too dark for me to see what the front side looks like.

I should also mention that changing the footprint of the island is likely to catapult you into flooring issues. Potentially hugely expensive flooring issues given the apparent quality of existing and the square footage. So keep that tidbit in mind when considering alternatives.

Check out Walzcraft for matching the cabinet door style. They will have something very, very close to your style if not an exact match. Wholesale only so you will need to work with a cabinet firm that has access.

This kitchen is very similar to yours, even the hood style. Notice the mix of raised panels and flat panels with applied molding in this kitchen. It may be possible to turn the raised panels around on your island to the flat side and reuse them.

Hello - thanks for sharing your project ideas here. You have a lovely home. Without knowing what you don't like about your current island but knowing that you like "European Farmhouse" styling, I have a few ideas.

- In looking at the pictures of your home, the wood tones and your current furnishings are very warm with soft beige undertones. I believe if you painted the kitchen cabinetry and only some of the woodwork a cool white, it may be jarring visually. My suggestion would be to consider a slight off-white with a beige or taupe undertone. This will brighten the space but it will not make it look out of place.

- Navy blue is a hot trend right now but I would agree with Sophie's sentiment of not getting caught up in a trend. Even though the advice was worded strongly, I think she is just cautioning you to be sure your investment is worthwhile in the long run. But mostly, for me, when I think European Farmhouse, I think antiqued-paint finishes and a softer blue tone - like a robins egg or wedgewood blue. But that's just me :) Whatever you chose, consider a adding a distressed finish to it.

- For the island, you have the opportunity to really inject your style here. Adding chunky farmhouse legs, open space below or even a wood top would add more European Farmhouse feel (in my opinion).

- Two islands - I personally love the look and functionality of a working island parallel to an island with seating. You do have an open area where another island could sit but I believe it may encroach on the space where you intend on putting a reading nook. Remember, it would not just be the island in the space but the traffic flow around it that you would need to consider. Not sure if you like the look, but a T-shaped island with a lower table-level section would fit the space well and would replace the table seating where the reading nook will go.

So those are just my immediate ideas. A local design professional would really be able to help you best with both color and space in redesigning your home. It would be a worthwhile investment. Take what you like and leave the rest :) Best of luck!

As others have posted, your kitchen is functional and attractive by objective standards. It also works well with the rest of your open floor plan which carries through the look and feel of the wood. While it might not be your dream kitchen, painting cabinets would probably only decrease the value of the kitchen to potential buyers.

Don't you have better things to spend $50,000 or even $30,000 on. As others have posted, once you start changing things it really starts steamrolling in terms of expense. Per Sophie's comment, I had to gut my kitchen with a commensurate budget because any small discrete fixes would snowball it into further changes - but mine was objectively a kitchen ghetto that was original 1965 and no one could objectively say it was objectively attractive but just not to their taste or that it functioned well :-)

I love your kitchen cabinets! (I'm one who loves white kitchens too) I would leave the island but make it one level. Maybe a new marble countertop is what you need. Also you could get new lights or add crystals for bling. That tile you picked is too big for a backsplash.

Now that I've seen your pictures of the whole downstairs and kitchen... I think the kitchen you have now works beautifully. I get that it's not your style, but this kind of house really isn't a good candidate for budget fixes like paint. It looks like the whole house just isn't your style at all, and it would cost A LOT of money to make it look like some kind of cohesive muddle between traditional and farmhouse. If you just change the kitchen it'll look very out of place. I think your best option is to learn to love the house you're in, or go out and get a different house that loans itself to your style.
