Timber Deck Orientation

I am planning a timber deck and I am seeking advice regarding the orientation of the boards, should I run the boards parallel to the house or perpendicular? I don't have any photos but essentially there is currently a concrete and tiled outdoor / entertaining area which is quite uneven and not very user friendly (outdoor table sits half on tiled area and half on concrete area and as such is uneven), there is a large sling door (stacking) leading to the outdoor / entertaining area. The plan is to install a timber deck over the concrete (once tiles removed) in order to have a level and larger outdoor / entertaining area.

Either way is great, it’s really a matter of choice, my choice is parallel as it really defines the space.

Jamie, generally we more often than not run boards parrallel to the house but this also depends on not only the size of the deck but also which way you can install the framing under.

Generally, a lot of decks are quite rectangular to the house, thus by having the boards run along the wall it can help in giving a more spacious feel to the area rather than shorter boards running out. Hope that makes sense?

You can check out the outdoor floor tiles like the Scala (Google Snap and Go tile) which are easy to piece additionally on the ground for a new look. ;) I saw another brand here, http://list.qoo10.sg/item/OUTDOOR-TIMBER-FLOOR-TILE-SINGAPORE-SELLER-100-AUTHENTIC-BEAUTIFUL/482453309 (not sure where this brand is from but they all work the same). They even have faux grass, stones as well as timber. Definitely easy to DIY, and you can combine different surfaces together if you want (stones and wood combo for example).

Yes, wonderful question - so many beautiful features from so many eras. I love mid century beach houses, clean lines, timber and stone, a open staircase to a mezzanine bedroom loft, flowing out to a deck of ocean view ... If you can imagine what Mike and Carol Brady's beach house would possibly look like (?) .. this would be my ultimate!

Our proposed solution is to build a stainless steel structure with industrial-grade walkway grating to span the depression in the balcony. This solution ensures a lifespan of 10 years and beyond. Hi EJ, I'm not going to be of much help, but I believe the obvious sources of reclaimed wood would be demolition and removal specialists in Singapore? At least that's how I know how antique dealers source vintage tiles in Singapore. Chatting with reclaimed wood furniture specialists like Journey East (https://www.houzz.com.sg/pro/journeyeast) might help too. And its true shipping costs from overseas would be prohibitive. Malaysia has always been this country's hinterland for raw material, and Indonesia has also played the part of being a significant sourcing ground for furniture makers in the region. You might want to (or have already) make sourcing trips to Central Java or Bali where costs might even be significantly lower than finding these pieces in Singapore.
