Can you tell me if your wall color is the same as the kitchen cabinet color just different sheens?
It’s been suggested that I paint my walls of my open concept room like yours the same as the cabinet color, for a more cohesive look.Color can be brought in via furniture and artwork. I am having a hard time envisioning this. What color are your walls?

Hi!

The walls are Sherwin Williams Modern Gray SW 7632 and the kitchen cabinets are Sherwin Williams Natural Choice SW 7011. This is a very large home so we typically paint cabinetry a different color from the walls. Small open concept homes we have painted walls and cabinetry the same color so the space will feel much larger than it actually is.

Hi Rubypumps. Unfortunately you have made the common mistake of mixing undertones. I see this a lot as a colour consultant. Mistakes with your hard finishes are the worst kind because they are very costly to change. Right now your walls have a pink undertone and your walls behind the tub and counter are clearly blue grey. Since blue is complementary to pink, it brings out the pink in the tile even more and the clean blue makes the tile look dirty. It may be hard for you to see this, but this is what's happening and this is probably why you don't like your bathroom. Since you chose such a busy mosaic, it has become the boss (and focal point) of the room and I would now keep your other finishes as simple as possible. If you can, down the road, change the beige tile. Because unfortunately, there is no magic colour combination that will make it disappear. Working with what you have, I would most likely go with a more neutral cabinet like Uniboard G21 Viva Walnut. It will help warm up the space. Black is too stark for this bathroom.

Herring bone is beautiful but expensive to install. Teak is a little darker than oak so if the room is small then you will want to work with the lightest wood = oak. Oil finish will offer low gloss with a beautiful silky/velvety appearance that keeps the wood looking very natural. Easy to repair by the homeowner if scratches occur. Low traffic areas (like bedrooms) can have finish reapplied every few years...depending on wear. A low gloss polyurethane will do the same thing...but some people complain of "foot prints" being visible on the matte poly finish. Turns out the oils from the skin/socks is shinier than the matte finish = foot prints.

Hi Rachel, This is quite easy to fix. Firstly I would brighten the space up with a white paint such as Nippon Violet Whispers (warm white), this will give you a good base to work from. Then I would replace your table with one that is larger. This table is too small to be useful and is making your entrance feel small. I recommend using teak and keeping this console table simple in design. On the wall I would place artwork - the bigger the better as this will make a dramatic statement. Then add some lighting (table lamp on console table) and decorative items and voila your entrance will be instantly chic! I have mocked up two options for you - one is based on blues, the other pinks, so depending on your preference you can go either way. This is the blue version with hints of tropical This is the pink version. My humble advice would be to spend a little thought and design and obviously budget into the bathroom (dont forget to make certain that the flooring in the bathroom is water proofed professionally) and kitchen design. This is usually where most of the budget goes. Next would be to rewire the home. Electrical work is also rather expensive these days so make sure you hire a reputable contractor. Rest of decor you could decide later and see how far your budget goes. Renovating is never an easy process, so be patient and decide on what you want first and then communicate this to your designer. As changes later can be very expensive.
