Houzz Editor Shares 3 Home Design Trends Popular Now

In this episode of Houzz TV Live, editor Mitchell Parker highlights three takeaways from his latest article about six home design trends on the rise. Shades of brown are showing up everywhere, including on wallpaper and kitchen cabinets. Dark jewel tones are demanding attention in kitchen and bathroom millwork, among other places in the home. And light wood floors work beautifully with popular whites and grays.

Hi Mitchell, thanks so much for the new design trends. I am wondering if I can replicate the light woods in the featured kitchen. Do you think I can do my floors in the ombre look featured on the front of the island on my wood floors? I would appreciate your direction on this.

These are super! I've always favored lighter woods and am so glad I had light maple pergo installed when I bought my house. Everyone who visits comments on how pretty the floors are. In NYC I grew up with dark hard-wood floors which were "OK", then in Seattle it was all about wall to wall carpet. But here in Arizona I'm loving my light smooth cooling wood again. :)

I tend to stay away from trends as we all know they come and go. Many trends are regional. As designers we should be responding to the client's architecture, light and existing design elements. I have used dark grey cabinets when the project called for it to complement wood. I have been using the "mushroom" color for years which is really light taupe. Let's face it, nothing has a very long shelf life. Don't get caught up in the copy cat design styles because most of us cannot afford to be changing out our cabinets every 5 years.

I totally agree with you, I encourage my clients to stick with timeless materials for the costly items such as flooring, cabinetry and countertops. We follow trends by using the lesser expensive soft goods such as pillows, art and other decor items.

Agree with Rebecca trends are beautiful right now but I think I would think about what I want to live with in the long terms and that expresses me and not what everyone else has.

I agree. I’m a home builder in North MS and everyone is wanting farm houses. What’s worse is all of them are wanting the same colors as well.
I have built 6 customs this year that are almost identical. They are beautiful and I like them, but I’m afraid it’s a trend that will fade with time.
