Mumbai Houzz TV: An Apartment is Transformed Into a Glam Home
As an army kid, Shalini Sekhri’s nomadic upbringing was inspired by adventure. “We were on the move every few years. Wherever we went, we took home with us. Back then, ‘home’ was defined by people, not place,” says Sekhri. As she grew older, however, Sekhri began to feel the need to put down roots. “As a finance professional with a demanding job, I wanted a place with calming vibes to come home to. I was clear that I wanted to customise everything to suit my style and sensibilities, and requested the builder to hand over the home bare-shelled,” says Sekhri.
Sekhri’s USA-based sister encouraged her to try the Houzz app which Sekhri used to browse photos and create ideabooks. After scouring design professionals in her area on Houzz and reading a plethora of reviews, Sekhri decided to hire Smit Bhagat and Rajvi Mehta, co-founders, and principal architect and principal interior designer respectively, of deSigneR - Architects and Interior Designers, to harmonise her ideas and help breathe life into her dream home.
Gorgeous! I love the saturated colors and the glamour.
This is stunning. I love the color. I love how the neutrals accent the bold colors. But my favorite is the black marble. This is one of the most beautiful master bath I have seen on Houzz. Wow. And then there is the closet. I love everything. Great job!
This is stunning in every detail. Wow!
WOW, glamorous indeed! Enjoy your gorgeous new home!
It’s amazing what they were able to accomplish in this space with such limited natural light.
Wow! The nicest apartment I've seen on Houzz. Lovely colours and layout. Looks much bigger than 860 sq ft
Hats off to houzz! You did an incredible job telling her story and showing her personal space. Looking forward to more videos like this. Thank you!
Loved how clear the client was with who she was & her objectives. A strong woman who knows what she wants, probably didn’t waste time and money on a lot of change orders. The designer execution was terrific, so well thought for the spaces!
I was brought to tears by the beauty of this space. Well done!!!
Elegantly sumptuous! This home is divine! I love seeing articles from across the globe!
Such a thoughtful and innovative design. I loved the jewelry display and the bar.
Fantastic home, design and article. Loved it!
Wow. Gorgeous!
Gorge!
Really great video with lots of shots of the apartment while the designers and owner talk in the background. Too many home shows only show very quick shots of the actual home, and too many shots of people talking.
Wow!! Very nice and beautiful. I am just curious what is the square footage or the layout to make such an awesome place to live in? Or it all about the design and layout. Is the floor plan available somewhere? Thanks
You did an amazing job
Yes, more like this from different countries.
Wow! Absolutely beautiful!
Absolutely beautiful! You did such a nice job! I would love this space!
good
BEAUTIFUL JOB!!! SUPERB LAYOUT!! GORGEOUS COLOURS!! A really really pleasing space.
Such a beautiful apartment. Well done to the designers.
Wow! Design and function are exquisite! Bravo to the homeowner and the design team who assisted her in her dream. Hard to believe it's the size it is - as the flow and space seems to call for friends and family to gather. Enjoy!
Belíssimo apartamento. Top... Top...
Love, Love, Love this. But if entertaining is a priority, where is dining table?
Really beautiful. Well done and great use of space and light.
I like how she said 'It's all about me". I'm facing a move in the near future and as a recent widow I will be decorating with myself in mind.
Definitely not my aesthetic. I don't like the velvety tufted sofa, and I think the flooring in the bedroom is too busy and does not complement the flooring nearby. Also I would have used a lighter hand with the draperies. They are a little bit too heavy. But I am very glad this young woman got her dream apartment.
I LOVE everything about this lovely woman, her design team and their mutually planned and executed elegant apartment. Perfection all the way around!!
Fantastic use of space! Love the colors.
Excellent job, I love the custom closet
Excellent collaboration between the homeowner and the designers. Glad you have what you envisioned.
Fabulous! "It is unapologetically all about me." As it should be! Kudos to the designers and homeowner!
I could live here quite easily as it fits my sense of style. That would be my highest compliment!
Congrats! Tastefully done and great design. It really looks larger than it is.
I love your unapologetically beautiful home! Thank you for sharing.
Just gorgeous! Great designers. Enjoy.
The bar blew me away (something you'd expect in a bachelor pad), good for her! Lovely choice of materials and colors, great lighting and mirrors. Enjoyed the video.
I love Houzz videos. Such a fantastic space and although overseas, the design is very relevant for NYC living as well. The color palette is sophisticated with a efficient use of space. It would be great to see floor plans accompanying the project in the future or stats on the square footage, program, etc. Great work!
love it
So well done!! Truly beautiful.
What a beautiful tastefully remodeled home. I love the the walk in closet with the wonderful counter.
Absolutely stunning! Love the way she explained her dream. Way to go girl...!
Stunning!
This is beyond beautiful. I might say this is the icing to the cake that most girls dream of. Stunning.
lovely warm home!! so inspiring, congratulations!!!!
Great job. Fabulous, modern and liveable
Flawless
Saved the video. I would differently consider them for my house. Hope you would be ready to work in Chennai...
Very elegant. Congratulations to you on achieving your dream space. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Thank you everyone for your lovely comments! we had a great time designing this dream home for Shalini.
is the bar used for dining? I love the lighting. :)
Absolutely AWESOME!
Fabulous, very well designed. Love your taste and touch of class.
Absolutely amazing. I could easily live here except I would like a dining room table and chairs to entertain. Well done to everyone. If here is a floor, plan available I,would, love to see it. Thanks for sharing.
'Unapologetically about me'! Love it!!!
From listening to Shalini speak, she is sooo like her home and her home is soooo like her. I hope I'm a clear about my vision for my cottage in the woods as she is about her making her designs her own.
Congratulations Shalini! You are a strong, young wonderful woman. Many good years full of smiles and happiness for you!
it's amazing
Please show us a floorplan with measurements. The place looks quite large. And really lovely for a city lifestyle.
I really enjoyed Shalini's story and the way she told it. The space is amazing. So clearly "hers". The HOUZZ video's producer, director, production designer, cinematographer and probably a host of others all did a fantastic job in the creation of it. I love the apartment, Shalini, and the video. I hope to see more such video stories in the future.
Just gorgeous and the colors are sumptuous! How am I not living in this fabulous home?
wowowow!!! it's really beautiful, congratulation! the personality of the owner comes through for sure :) and every inch of the flat was used very well. I love it! very welcoming, stylish and warm in my oppinion.
@HU-348083140: Size is all the matter of perspective as well as location and photography. Considering all these factors, it's likely the original 2 bedroom apartment is between 600-1100 sq ft. The elongated bath 'looks' is due to the lens used on the camera. The average couch - 3 seater is about 80". The shower and toilet area are each obviously about 3' x 3' with the toilet area approximately 6" -12" wider, so the back wall is about 7'. As for the length, well, you see part of it on the photo including the toilet side. The photo above it shows the photo was taken from the opposite wall since the mirrors are included as well as a 'foreshortened' view of the toilet and wall plumbing. It does show the sink which is very close opposite the toilet/shower which indicates the room is probably about 5 or 6' long. The mirror wall which is perpendicular to the sink again looks to be about 7' wide.
I could go on with the living area, kitchen, bed area, but I think you get the idea. Besides measurements mean little other than how smaller spaces can look larger as you believe it is. It's all about decorating and things one can learn. One can apply the mirrors, space separations, colours and so on to their own tastes and sizes of various rooms.
Just beautiful, I absolutely love the closet. When I worked, I wanted to see my clothes all color coordinated and pick them out the night prior. I also would open my jewelry case that is attached to the wall and pick out what I wanted to wear. Unfortunately I do not have a walk in but plenty of storage. Stalinism did everything so tasteful and warm.
what I love about this space is that people are bringing in professionals to design even a relatively smaller apartment (not by Mumbai standards, but rest of india) and this is how it should be. also how much she has made the place suitable for her needs. this is also very glamorous and the colours are lovely.
celestina89 I get all that. I see in realestate cuts that sometimes the fridge & kitchen doorway look as wide as my garage door! The reason that I like a floor plan with measurements is because I am always building, buying & renovating & when I see something of interest to me I prefer not to simply guess. I'm sure that most of the time places that have been rencently done have the plans as part of the paperwork & could be included. I read a lot of comments even on properties which are of no interest because I learn a lot from others. I often read that people would have liked to see a floorplan with measurements. Not everyone can figure it out in their heads or even draw it.
@HU-348083140: I remember a response by Becky Harris in one of her articles that the owners etc. do not always want to share their floor plan nor particulars such as measurements. So I guess it's an individual thing because some do but most do not.
I tend to look at ideas, though some, I admit would be nice to have measurements, but really not necessary as most I can figure out. If a fridge looks wide they are generally 36" wide fridge or two column types that are put together. I'm building a cottage from scratch, but use my own measurements for room sizes that I desire. From there, I research various designs. I use a simple draw program. It works for me. There are a zillion of them, some free if you don't care about details.
We all do things differently. Merry Merry - and a Good 2020....
I am a retired architect and I am very wary of the distortions that always occur in the kind of interior photos shown here. Why a simple floor plan with a scale is not attached is beyond me. Without a plan it is impossible to really understand a space unless there are significant visual cues whose dimensions are known. That doesn't happen very often, however, and while the photos are pretty pictures the spaces are no where near what they seem to be in the photo. THe use of wide angle lenses may get more into a pic but the story is not true. If you really want your readers to understand a project and learn from it you would provide plans and a scale.
Absolutely gorgeous and inspiring. Thank you for sharing it, a feast for my eyes.
Small apartment, where?! Nicely done!
This is lovely!! They captured your vision perfectly
Eye candy!! Just wow! Perfectly illustrates that bigger is not always better!
Absolutely stunning! Very well done. I want her closet and bathroom and living room....just all of it!
Brilllllliant! Bravissimo! I WANT her apartment! Such a beautiful apartment and family! Sexy and efficient.
Not my style, but I applaud this strong woman for getting EXACTLY what she wants, no apologies. That’s what a ‘home’ should feel like, a place that makes YOU happy and represents yourself. BTW that closet’s island is perfection!
860 sq. ft...WOW, I'm impressed.
There’s nothing good for a designer like meeting or exceeding the expectations of a client. And it’s easier when the client knows what he/she wants. Everything came out well, very impressive,
Absolutely beautiful!

Very glamorous home.
This is wonderful. What a transformation!
my apt is 860 sq ft as well but her walk in closet is huge for a one bedroom.
It’s a beautiful home. Well done
Exceptional!!!
Not my cup of tea but this place has style and glam and the X factor. A lovely home that mirrors Sekhri's taste and personality which is, after all, what homes should be about. Thank you for sharing.
@kielevy: The actual apartment was originally a 2 bedroom apt, not a one bedroom. They used the second bedroom as the walk-in closet and dressing area. :)
Love everything except the bathroom.
That panda marble in the bath is AMAZING! Lovely home
woooow!!!!beautiful !!!is my dream :(
There is only two words to describe her home, Simply Beautiful❤️❤️
I enjoyed this video immensely.
Amazing woman, fantastic apartment
Great ideas as I contemplate downsizing from a home to a small apartment in a retirement community: bring on the light with interior glass, mirrors and good lighting.
Beautiful home
What a beautiful apartment! The light, colors, and textures make this such an inviting home. Thank you for this video!
Wonderful design!! Absolutely beautiful💓
Total beauty
Awesome
She got what SHE wanted! That’s all that matters! BRAVO!
Absolutely stunning!
Truly beautiful works
and talented owner, visionaries and the designers ...excellent master piece to you all and very inspiring. Thank you for sharing.

Great job!!!
What a beautiful home you made for yourself!
Beautiful space. Glamorous yet welcoming. I really love the bar area and your closet.
Beautiful. I guess dreams do come true after all. I'm inspired!
Love this story! The home owner had great vision and the designers brought it to fruition!
Serendipity! 1970-1975 my wife and I lived at Navroze Apartments on B. Desai Rd opp. Mahalaxmi Temple. (Our daughter Jennifer was born at nearby Breach Kandy Hospital in 1972.) It was a dream home for us, looking on the Arabian Sea. We were young but had been selected by management to perform entertainment duties for my employer Bank of America, located at Nariman Point. Wonderful guests like J.R.D. Tata, Khushwant Singh and Gafoor Noorani were frequently with us. TODAY, I, too, am using Houzz to select elements for our next and probably final home to be constructed in 2020. It was so fun to listen to this clear, "unapologetically" egocentric creator so clearly describe "her" space... in probably less than half the space we enjoyed at Navroze. I would have been proud to entertain in this elegant, cleverly designed apartment. Kudos to those involved in its design and implementation!
It is the lighting that makes it. The lighting is incredible. This is the best display of ceiling lights, cabinet lights and fixtures I have ever seen. Kudos.
Wow, one of my favorite Houzz features! I too was very moved by this... a successful, single woman creating her dream home, which is also all about creating a great experience for her friends and loved ones! I would have also loved to hear a tiny bit about her plans to give back to the world, to help so many in India and elsewhere living in abject, desperate poverty, starving, suffering; she has such a great spirit, I am sure she's done a lot in that area, or wants to. Bling and soul can go hand in hand.
What an awesome project!
Beautifully executed
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful.
WOW!! Absolutely Beautiful 💗
love it......
they created something magical with this limited space!! impressive!
Lovely
What?! No white Shaker kitchen? ;-) This place is gorgeous, a breath of fresh air that shows wonderful creativity and personality.
Absolutely amazing!
Beautiful
hats off to to this team you chose. not only is this a beautiful welcoming home your story touched my heart every apt I have had thus far has never become home. all my ideas , everything I dreamed of I never have been able to do. it has brought me into a depressed state and before listening to this video I had no hope . maybe one day , an apt came become "home" for me too.
btw absolutely great blend of colors ! I just love it all❤️
861 square feet - I'm amazed! My first condo was 910 square feet, and this looks twice as large. The layout is so creative and airy. The only caveat I have is displaying all her lovely jewelry. I would be so afraid that an unscrupulous housekeeper or contractor might see it and mention it to a less honest person. Otherwise, I would love to see more stories on smaller apartments and condos.
JUST SIMPLY STUNNING
Nice
Lovely!
Love it!!
Beautiful story told . Love how she knew exactly what she wanted . for a small apartment it seem larger than it actually is.

Absolutely stunning, difficult to believe that its an 860 sft apartment. So much grandeur has been included with in the limited space.
Thank You Sampath Kumar :)
Amazing, interesting part of this home , I liked the most , that it reflects the person who owns it . Having a satisfying experience with your consultant Architects is most important. I hardly see it , customers are left with a lot of regret….Gods luck to Shalini …
It’s Beautiful
Flooring details ?
Brilliant work!
Awesome 👌
What is the amount charged for this interior works?
Amazing work .. cost??
Hi Naman, the house was executed in 5000 Rs. / Sqft.
Amazing
It's definitely not 860 sq ft. If it is what you claim, it's nothing less than a conjuring magic trick.
