Who: Ronnie Safdie of Berceli Interior Remodeling
Where: New York City
In his own words: “I love the point when we are about to install the finishes. I have a great appreciation for when the images become reality.”
Choosing an interior design that will work for you now and in the future will save you money and time down the road. Ronnie Safdie, the owner of Berceli Interior Remodeling, recommends changes that feel fresh and new with enough traditional elements to give the space some longevity. “It needs to be up to date, but classic and elegant,” the New York City-based designer says.

A design journey. Safdie’s winding career path has always been anchored by his love of design. He owned several fashion boutiques in the 1980s and ’90s but gradually sold those off and began importing kitchen cabinetry from Spain around 1999. He and his partner opened their first showroom in 2000. “One thing led to another, and now I design and install kitchens and baths and renovate homes,” Safdie says.
A collaborative effort. Safdie encourages homeowners to start the design process by bringing in their own ideas and desires. “It’s important that we give you what you wish,” he says. He helps clients fine-tune their ideas and troubleshoot any possible problems. “We’re all working toward the mission of the end result,” he says.

1. Keep Classic Details
Pay homage to your home’s roots by using some traditional elements. In the bathroom of this prewar apartment on the Upper West Side, Safdie went with a classic black-and-white tile floor in a basket-weave pattern and pillow-top subway wall tile. He kept it fresh with modern chrome fixtures.
The team also built a half wall with a glass partition above it to separate the vanity from the tub and help break up the long, narrow space. On the tub side of the wall, Safdie added a niche that keeps bath products handy but out of sight. “You need to use every square inch of space,” he says.

2. Embrace an Updated Layout
Bring your space into the 21st century with a modern floor plan that suits your needs, Safdie says. His team created an open layout in the Midtown co-op seen here, removing a wall to connect the kitchen to the main living area. The change enhanced the home’s flow and created more space for entertaining.
Porcelain tile resembling wood planks extends into the living area, and waterfall countertops and slab cabinetry offer crisp lines. The effect is one of polished cohesion. The team also expanded the clients’ master bathroom by incorporating an existing closet.

3. Mix in Contemporary Elements
Weave in modern details to enjoy a fresh look. In this kitchen on the Upper East Side, sleek stainless-steel appliances and contemporary lights juxtapose pleasingly with crown molding and Shaker-style cabinetry. “The cabinet doors in white lacquer and the marble countertops are the classic elements that give the room a timeless elegance,” Safdie says. The more modern pieces keep it current.
Safdie continued mixing new elements into the rest of the home. He gave the master bathroom a modern feel with stone tile and a stone tub apron, and he updated the family bathroom with contemporary cabinetry and fixtures.
