Neat bar-space for 12" shelves on side away from chairs?

bar height only, not big counter behind it
neat concept, but not glass. Smaller counter height counter
how does something like this compare to a deeper counter side?
the front of the island is neat-could 12" shelves be immediately behind/under the red countertop?
neat shelves-possible way to reduce cost? Put on frig side of bar and have flat panel on chair side. Ignore counter portion of island
