Hexagon-shaped tiles are still benefiting from the recent trend for geometric patterns in home furnishings. They’re more interesting than straight-up rectangles and squares, and add understated elegance to any interior. Introduce gentle pattern and bags of style to your home with these ideas.
1. Take a short-cut to sophisticated style
These floor tiles have a simplicity that’s stunning. This minimally styled, sleek room could have looked a little boring, but the black hexagonal floor tiles add just the right amount of interest to elevate it to another level.

2. Try the unexpected
Using tiles in an unexpected place can add an eye-catching element to a room. These beautiful hexagons make a wonderful bedhead and are a great way to enjoy a pattern it might be difficult to incorporate elsewhere.
As you don’t need many, they won’t break the bank, even if they’re a little pricier. This is a great project for a novice DIY-er, because there’s no tile-cutting needed. Just make sure you’re happy with the position of the bed before you start!

3. Add subtle contrast
Small marble hexagon tiles have been used here to punctuate an all-white kitchen. The contrasting colour, shape and texture has great impact and the mottled shades are really practical in a cooking area, as they won’t show every splash.

4. Throw multiple shapes into the mix
In this bathroom, everything’s simple and understated, but each element is unusual in itself, making an impressive mix. Our hero hexagon tiles are matt, with delicate grout lines that gently outline the shape. These then support the statement round copper and marble fittings for an easy but striking finish.

5. Celebrate the texture
If you want an all-white scheme but don’t want a sterile feel, hexagon mosaics could be for you. The small-scale design breaks up a space, adding interest without being too shouty.
The tiles come on a 30-centimetre-square mesh backing, so aren’t overly time-consuming to install, and they make it easy to incorporate curved surfaces, like this bath surround. Rather than white, use a contrasting grout (grey is good, but you could try a bright colour for maximum impact) to highlight the shape of the tiles.

6. Hit the mark in a hallway
Hexagon-tiled floors, with their added interest and pattern, are ideal in hallways and open areas where there isn’t much furniture to obscure the design.
Rather than simply picking out the hexagon shapes with contrasting grout, push the look a little and try hexagonal tiles with a repeat pattern, as here.

7. Mix old and new
Terracotta tiles may feel too country for some, but when they’re this shape, they feel more contemporary, so they make a good bridge between the two styles. If you have any exposed brickwork, as in this kitchen, they’ll tie in nicely with it for a modern country feel.

8. Use a little to great effect
Hexagonal marble tiles can be pretty expensive, but there are ways to incorporate them without blowing the budget. Lay mosaics in a column in the shower, as shown here, or as a basin splashback – somewhere you’ll be able to see and enjoy them every day.
Surround the marble mosaics with plain tiles. This not only keeps the finances under control, it also acts as a frame so the decorative tiles stand out.

9. Update country style
Hexagon tiles often have a crisp, modern feel, but this scheme shows they can work beautifully in a more traditional setting. Pale blue and white is soft, pretty and timeless, but the hexagon shape adds a nod to modern decor, giving country a contemporary twist.
