As interior stylist Priscilla Tan from styledbypt explains she’s more a professional to help with “home makeover woes”.

It might be easier to understand the difference between an interior designer, and a stylist if you think about the older term used, an interior decorator. A designer designs, and the stylist or decorator decorates.
What do you need to know about working with an interior stylist?
According to Tan, budget is probably the main thing you need to consider when working with an interior stylist.

“You need set aside a budget for decor items from rugs, art, faux plants and throw cushions to bedding and even candles, if you want a gorgeously curated styled space.
“Most people do not realise that this is important for styling and only budget for renovation works and furniture.
“On average, you need to set aside at least 5 to 15 per cent of your renovation budget for this, depending on the brands you are purchasing,” explains Tan.

Tip: One thing interior stylists do very well is source great furniture and furnishing. The usually have proprietary suppliers and can get their hands on decorative items you won’t find anywhere else.
How do I choose the right interior stylist?
As with any major decision about your home, you need to do your research and take time to find the right person who gels with you and your style.
“Style, chemistry and most importantly communication” should guide you in selecting who to hire says Tan.

The interior designer is closer to an architect, in that they have had formal training and are usually registered with their professional body.
An interior stylist is less likely to be registered, and also less likely to be able to do major renovation works. This is the person who will help you make more ‘soft’ interior choices, as well as update an existing space.
