Singapore interior stylist Priscilla Tan from styledbypt, who’s known for her creative children’s rooms, shares some great tips for designing a child’s dream space.

1. Be different with colour
Just like you wouldn’t dress your son in only blue or daughter in only pink, Tan suggests expanding your colour choices and look for other bright colour schemes.

She says to remember to apply a primer before you put up the wallpaper to make it easier to remove later.
“Some people think that wallpaper is not lasting, but they generally hold up great in Singapore for five to 10 years,” explains Tan.

3. Have fun with fabric
Tan says that you can add more texture to a child’s room by using interesting fabrics.

“Using soft furnishing details such as pom poms or trio colour band contrasts. It’s like the accessory to a great outfit,” says Tan.

5. Pick non-kiddie furniture
Kids grow up more quickly than we plan! So, it’s a great idea to choose furniture that’s going to be able to ‘grow’ with them.
For example, you can ‘pad’ the sides of a regular single bed for your child.

Go with normal-sized storage furniture and use baskets at floor level until the child grows older.
You can also create small play areas in the child’s bedroom like these very popular kid’s tents.
Go for basic fixtures and fittings like these shelves that will be fine no matter the age of the child.
