A Lake Norman-area design-build expert shares ways to realize your ideal active retreat

Who: Jim Shalvoy of Patrick Joseph Distinctive Homes
Where: Cornelius, North Carolina
In his own words: “People call us before they have a [property] lot or know what kind of home they want. We start with their dreams and guide them along the way, taking over all the heavy lifting.”
Do you adore grilling with friends, paddleboarding on placid blue water, hiking with breathtaking lake views? If you prefer to spend all your spare time outdoors, then consider designing your home around your passions. “If you want a more active lifestyle, then think about how you can connect your house to the outdoors,” says Jim Shalvoy, co-founder with his brother, Mike, of Patrick Joseph Distinctive Homes in the Lake Norman area. “You could be kayaking, listening to the waves breaking on the beach or sitting around a fire pit in crisp fall weather. Who wouldn’t want that?”

A brotherly bond. Shalvoy worked for a building products manufacturer after college. His brother pursued custom homebuilding, creating ultrahigh-end homes in Vail, Colorado. Then, in 1999, “my brother was visiting me at Lake Norman, and over a couple glasses of wine and ideas on the back of a napkin, we created our design-build firm,” Shalvoy says. The firm’s title combines the brothers’ middle names.
A comfortable process. The brothers take pride in making the building and remodeling process enjoyable for clients. “Because of the amount of time we spend with people, starting with a clean sheet of paper, then having lunch or coffee together after meetings, we’ve developed close relationships that often turn into enduring friendships,” Shalvoy says. They sometimes create multiple homes for the same client.

Ready to have a home that makes you feel like you’re always on vacation? Shalvoy shares his tips below.
1. Select the Right Site
Choose a property carefully, Shalvoy says. “A sloped lot can accommodate a basement, while you can walk straight out to the dock or pool with a flat lot. And make sure you get the view you want, whether it’s a horizon view, a sunrise view or a cozier cove view, because that’s one thing you can’t change.”
The outdoor living room in Cornelius seen here enjoys a full sunset view, which the owners maximize by throwing open their French doors whenever they entertain. The wall of windows at the back of the house allows for a full water view from almost every room, and the flat lot lets people easily wander down to the lake.

2. Incorporate Outdoor Components
Whether you have teenage kids who want a sports court or you would like a cooking area where you can have friends over, “explore how you plan to use the outdoor living area,” Shalvoy says.
The owners of a home in Mooresville have five children ranging in age from teens to early 20s. Shalvoy’s team created a dock for their ski boat that’s just past an infinity pool and spa, seen here in the background. There’s an outdoor cooking space and dining area, and a place for lounging. Silver travertine tile covers the exterior floor to unify the space.

3. Go for Waterfront Style
For an aesthetic that fits the lake lifestyle, Shalvoy recommends a coastal Northeastern or Mediterranean style that has timeless, classic appeal.
The home seen here, also in Cornelius, was designed to reflect Nantucket, Massachusetts, style. Distinctive architectural features of this aesthetic include cedar shingle siding and a cedar shingle roof. Shalvoy’s team applied an off-white wash to the siding to simulate weathering from salt air. White painted trim, white windows with grilles and a double-pitched roof complete the look.
