A Chicago-area designer shares ways to add pops of personality to your spaces

Who: Leslie Hutchison
Where: Joliet, Illinois
In her own words: “I love connecting with my clients and building lasting relationships. It’s fun to share in their excitement as we see their projects coming to life.”
As soon as you walk through your front door, you should immediately feel like you’re, well, home. Your eye should alight on collected treasures from favorite trips, artwork that evokes emotions and decorative accents that make your heart sing. “Your home should display a layering that tells the story of your life,” says Leslie Hutchison, owner of her eponymous design firm in Joliet. “It should reflect you — who you are, your experiences and memories. You want your home to feel like you.”

Like mother, like daughter. Even as a young child, Hutchison enjoyed watching her interior designer mother at work. “She would bring fabrics home, lay out wallcoverings and ask my opinion about everything,” Hutchison says. “She gave me my eye for design and exposed me to mixing color, pattern and texture.” The one downside of growing up with a designer? “Our house was never done!” Hutchison says with a laugh.
An eye for inspiration. Hutchison pulls from diverse sources to add depth to her clients’ projects. “I embrace lots of different genres of art,” she says, listing photography, abstract paintings and textured portraits as examples. Fashion and travel also give her ideas. “For example, I’ll mix French design with more of a casual California-type look,” she says.

1. Add Your Favorite Colors
Your preferred hues can make you feel more at home in any space. “Choose the colors that make you happy, that inspire you,” Hutchison says. “Even look at the colors you like to wear.”
In the living room seen here, in a home in Joliet, Hutchison used the client’s favorite pillows in pinks, greens and blues as a starting point. She used a base of soft neutrals, then chose a rug in sapphire blue. Throw pillows, artwork, vases and books extend the client’s chosen palette into the rest of the room. There’s even a subtle shade of blue woven into the fabric of the armchairs.

2. Mix Metals
Try combining different finishes and types of metal. Doing this, along with incorporating unique shapes, “adds the right amount of drama to a room,” Hutchison says.
In the same house in Joliet, the client loved brass but didn’t want it to take over her kitchen. Instead, Hutchison added it as a little extra sparkle, with brass rivets on the oven hood, brass nailheads on the bar stools and small brass candlesticks. The warm brass shines especially brightly in contrast with the sleek stainless steel appliances and polished-nickel cabinet pulls. Oversize round brass pendants glimmer like jewelry to finish the space.

3. Choose Meaningful Art
Find pieces that speak to you. “Art is very emotional,” Hutchison says. “It doesn’t have to be costly. You can mix high and low price points and still create a beautiful effect.”
The owners of a Plainfield home wanted their space to reflect the beach and the time they’d lived in California. Hutchison found the abstract oil painting seen here, which “feels like water; it’s very peaceful and serene,” she says. The soft hue and curved back of the chair in the space, as well as the sandy color of the walls, enhance the sense of coastal calm.
