Room Tour: Attic is Transformed into A Woodsy Wonderland
A tree-house concept comes to fantastical life in this split-level playroom
When Kenneth and Jael Tan moved to a corner terrace house for their growing family, there was only one designer they wanted to work with: Wayne Chan of Icon Interior Design Pte Ltd. Chan, you see, had transformed their first home, an apartment, into an ode to their favourite travel destinations as newlyweds. They knew that he could do the same with their new, bigger home. For the playroom where their children, Oliver and Odette, would exercise their imaginations, they completely trusted Chan to deliver the ultimate kids’ wonderland.
Grass carpet was laid on the floors, while a pale green hue was painted on the walls and ceiling. A stucco finish was applied to the ‘tree trunk’ to give it a bark effect. Trusses were painted brown, acting as branches for the faux vines and leaves and the fairylights. Tree and animal stencils were added on the walls to complete the woodland theme.
Toys are kept in the tree trunk, and the kids can bring out whichever assortment they want to play with for the day.

The corner terrace was to be renovated with a farmhouse theme; this would carry into one of the rooms on the third storey that was intended as the kids’ playroom. Chan decided to remove the false ceiling, revealing the attic space above this room. With this higher ceiling, he proposed a mezzanine level built from 25mm-thick plywood on solid wood supports for the playroom.
Incorporating the farmhouse theme, Chan designed the playhouse as a treehouse, with the mezzanine level creating the feeling of being up in the branches.
