Room Tour: Britannia Rules This Boys' Room
Heritage inspires their bedroom's design for these boys who are growing up away from their family's home countries
Four-year-old Archie and two-year-old Charlie (together with baby sister Frankie) live in sunny Singapore, far from the homelands of their mum Victoria and dad Tom. Designer Melisa White, who specialises in kids rooms, was commissioned to plan and decorate the boys’ room to reflect their British-Australian heritage. Shares White: “Victoria quotes, ‘I’m British and my husband is Australian but born in the UK. Growing up as an expat I feel it’s important the boys still learn all about where they and their family are from’.”
As the boys would be sharing a bedroom for the first time, White says, “The room had to be special, and their safe place together. It also had to be fun and a happy space.”
To infuse that fun, happy vibe, White added stars in the form of “the Will’s Star pin board, which is part of the matching linen, lampshade, rug and bunting set from the Patterson Rose collection from NZ. It is available at Piccolo House.” Archie’s bed is also from Piccolo House, while White sourced the bedside table and baby cot from IKEA.
“I designed the layout specifically so that another full size single bed could replace the baby cot in future,” White says.

Although “the room is primarily used for sleep and for bedtime stories,” says White, “it is such a fun and ‘boyish’ room. The dark blue feature wall adds depth to the room, whilst the colourful bunting – which matches the bedding, lamp shade and fabric-covered pin board – adds drama. The room is dramatic, but every element works in harmony.”
Little quintessentially British touches complete the design: Paddington Bear, a retro Kombi and London double-decker, and even that red telephone box.

Who lives here: An Australian-British family with three kids
Location: Sentosa Cove
Designer: Melisa White Interiors
White took her design cue from a London bus print used to upholster a child-size Egg chair she found at quirky furniture shop Fred Lives Here. She then chose “a classic British colour palette of red, white and blue to complement the egg chair and to inject personality into this new space for the boys. It is playful and colourful to the core!”
