Clarcarty Road

D4P worked on the extension and refurbishment of this Victorian terrace house in Fulham. The brief was to create a large family home with contemporary living amenities whilst maintaining the Victorian character of the front elevation. This three-bedroom house was transformed into a five-bedroom home complete with a basement that housed a cinema room, gym and a home office. The loft was extended with a contemporary style interpretation of a mansard roof, as the ‘kids zone’. The new basement, built underneath the existing house, is made light and airy with the use of strategically placed light-wells. The front lightwell is discretely installed in the front garden; one which does not detract from the Victorian character. The central space of the basement receives natural light through a triple height lightwell, complete with an olive trees which adds to the ambiance and the drama of the space. Location of this lightwell was of primary importance as it separates the kitchen from the living room of the wholly open-plan ground floor. Finally, walkable roof lights are design along the threshold of the rear door. The modern architectural language of the rear extension and the gardens means that these roof lights add the finishing touch to the contemporary composition of the space.
