With enormous rectangular beams and round log posts, the Spanish Peaks House is a spectacular study in contrasts. Even the exterior—with horizontal log slab siding and vertical wood paneling—mixes textures and styles beautifully. An outdoor rock fireplace, built-in stone grill and ample seating enable the owners to make the most of the mountain-top setting. Inside, the owners relied on Blue Ribbon Builders to capture the natural feel of the home’s surroundings. A massive boulder makes up the hearth in the great room, and provides ideal fireside seating. A custom-made stone replica of Lone Peak is the backsplash in a distinctive powder room; and a giant slab of granite adds the finishing touch to the home’s enviable wood, tile and granite kitchen. Your foyer – also known as a vestibule – is the first (and last) room people see when entering your country home, so creating a welcoming space is key. It should reflect the overall style of your home, and create a single point in which all other rooms flow. Start your entry off right by choosing a front door that is style appropriate yet interesting. Next, consider how you will use the space and include the required furniture items or storage solutions, such as a key rack or umbrella stand, to ensure it remains organised.

How do I make my country entry stand out?

Your front door is the first impression guests will have of your home, so make sure it is a good one. A door that looks rundown will imply what lies beneath is in need of a desperate makeover. The overall architectural style of your home should be reflected in your door, but you can experiment with size and shape, and also mix things up with paint colours and quirky hardware. If your entrance is set back from the facade of your home, consider using a brighter colour palette and adding potted plants and a welcome mat to help make it stand out. Wall sconces or hanging lights will also showcase your door and decor.

How do I organise my country foyer?

To avoid turning your entry into a dumping zone, install smart storage solutions to minimise clutter. First, think about what you do when you first walk into your country home. If you have a tendency to misplace your keys, leave your umbrella or kick off your shoes at the front door, consider including wall hooks, an umbrella stand and a shoe rack at the entry. Built-in joinery will further offer invaluable storage, while a console or hall table look great in bigger spaces.

How do I decorate my foyer?

In this small space, less is definitely more. But that’s not to say you can’t inject some fun into your entry. Experiment with the little details – hooks, bowls and storage bins – by using different materials, colours and textures, such as wood tones and metallics.
