In 1961, Marimekko designer Maija Isola travelled to the Mediterranean Sea, where she became awestruck by the sun’s rays dancing upon the sea. When she decided to recreate the beauty, Maija designed graphic wheels intricately woven together to create movement, like swirling water. The story ends with the pattern’s name: Joonas, or Jonah in English, the Biblical Jonah who was swallowed by a whale.
